[Ag-eq] german shepherds

The Goldens are such a loving a gentle breed.and make great guide dogs.  I can see being just above 5 feet where a Golden is a good match.  A bigger dog would drag you down the street.  I have known a couple of very nice Goldens in my life and thought they are wonderful dogs.  

I have a cat, that when I went up north and went hicking I took him with.  He walked on the leash with me, and if I was not keeping up he would sit down and wait for me to get over the rocks in path.  I kept asking him who was is trainer because I have never had a cat do that well on a lead.  I thought I should train him to be a guide cat.   He is a 20 pound Maine coon.

My one and only Seeing Eye dog was a female Golden Retreaver named Posie.  I 
was amazed on how they match the dogs to their owners once I was there at 
the school.  You had to do what they called Juno training for a day which is 
your trainer held the harness like he was the dog and he walked you around 
the grounds and then in a residential area with sidewalks.  It was then he 
showed you commands and he was assessing you on your height, walking speed, 
voice command level and your arm strength.  All of these things really 
matter when connecting you with the right dog.  I am only 5 foot 1 inch and 
for me to give a leesh correction, I had to actually step back with my left 
foot before I could get any snap with the leesh.  Thank goodness Posie 
hardly ever needed leesh correcting, verbal was good enough for her.  In 
fact, later in her life, if I gave her a leesh correction, she would drop 
flat to the ground and then it would take me almost three minutes before I 
could get her back up and going again.  She acted like I totally crushed her 
whole world and I found myself patting, stroking, hugging her and telling 
her I'm sorry and that she really was a good girl, so the correction aspect 
just went out of the window.  I really think she knew exactly what she was 
doing in the first place.
