Hi all, someone asked whether blind people can keep a garden? My answer is a
firm "Yes!". I have gardened at Sunnyside Organics for a year and a half,
did a year at Bush Park while I was a student at the Oregon School for the
Blind, pulled ivy off of trees for six Saturday's when I was a student at
Oregon City High School, did a few vollunteer days at Chemeketa Community
College that envolved gardening and I have had a number of small plants on
my small balkomy. I still have a number of small plants on my balkomy. I
have also followed the weather in Oregon for years and I have gazed at
daffodils since I was nine years old. I am not counting the many pumkpins
that I have harvisted nor the few apples that I have ever picked nor the
zillion black barries that I have picked nor the few strawberries and
raspbarries that I have picked and eaten nor even the two sun flowers that
have survived a summer with little care which also got its seeds harvisted
and they were wonderful to eat! I could go to town on techniques on how to
plant seeds and grow different plants. Some plants I know a lot better than
others. For example, I could tell you all about how to grow a daffodil but I
know very little about how to grow an onyon. In order to help you out in the
best way, I have a list of questions to point me in the direction that you
are headed in your gardening persuits.
What are you looking to get out of gardening as a blind person?
Are you planting your seeds in a pot or in the ground? What kinds of plants
are you trying to grow?
What time of day is the sunlight hitting your garden? Also, what kind of
weather are you dealing with?
Are you growing anything inside of a house and/or a greenhouse?
What kind of climate that you are living in with your garden? States are
fine by me.
Are you looking at learning gardening tules or just gardening techniques?
Are you looking at growing from seeds or bolbs?
Do you have all of your plants in pots or the ground?
Are you interested in learning how to start a plant before moving it to a
bigger pot or the ground?
If you are transplanting from a pot, what size is that pot?
Finally, are you growing organically?
I am an organic gardener who has Rettinopathy of Premiturity and have been
blind my whole life. I have some vition but it comes and goes with the glare
of the lighting. I work best by feeling the plants that I am working with. I
can get you going on some very general information. Each plant is a bit
different. Some plants like tomatoes and peppers grow in warmer weather.
Other plants like spinnach and kale grow in colder weather. Some seeds such
as brocholi get planted in the fall while other seeds such as sunflowers get
planted in the spring time. The same goes for different bolbs although most
bolbs like daffodils and tolups have to be planted in the fall. When you do
plant a bolb, the point always points tward the sky while all roots no
matter what plant they come from always get pointed down tward the ground.
Other factors like indian summers and sprinters or winter like springs are
also factors to concider when you are growing any plant. Last year for
instance, even the news has told gardeners of all levels to start their
summer vegetables during Father's Day weekend instead of Mother's Day
weekend because it was a winter like spring. On the other hand, this year,
every gardener has had to water their plants until this Friday when the rain
finally returns because of a wonderful Indian summer. The harvist was the
best one that I have seen in years! This year, I have harvisted kale, thyme,
zukini, grass, mint, patatoes and tomatoes. There are different techniques
for each plant that I have harvisted. The same goes with the size of pot
that you are working with. Different tules have different techniques as
well. I can say the same for the watering tules that you might be still
using depending on whether or not you are still under the Indian summer. I
know more about how to keep the pests away than taking out the pests once
they come with the exception of the weeds since I have pulled more weeds
than I can count. Feel free to let me know where best to point you. I'm
happy to help you out!
