Jody:

Hopefully Ranger will follow Maverick's lead and trust you more.

The only time I boot Cruiser is when we ride in rocky areas. I ride him on the
dirt canal path bare foot. He never has problems being bare foot on pavement,
but we don't ride on it much.

I don't like riding horses with shoes on pavement or slick rocks as they are
more likely to slip. Once I was riding with a group and one of the horses with
shoes slipped and fell while going down a paved hill. He was elderly and it
took some struggleing before he could get up. Another time I was riding with
some friends and we had to go over some areas of granite and one of the horses
fell. Both the horse and rider got scraped up a bit.

Cruiser has good feet and they would be even better if I rode him more. My mule
Allie had the best feet ever and I rarely had to put her boots on. We went into
some really rocky areas and she was just fine. My trimmer used to say that she
had perfect feet.

Your guys have probably never had shoes, so they should have good healthy feet.
Do you know if your ferrier has training in bare foot trimming?

Some ferriers trim the way they would if they were going to shoe. A barefoot
trim is different, so it's best if you can find someone with training or
experience. It's also good if the trimmer or ferrier really understand the
anatomy of the hoof. There are some different theories about trimming; I like
the Pete Ramey approach; you can read about him on line. I think his website is
www.hoofrehab.com.

I wonder how Ranger will act while having his feet done.

Good luck.

Nella
