There was an item on tonight's Sunday tv programme re how penguins living on Middle Island off the
coast of Victoria Australia were as near as 4 birds to being, completely wiped out by red foxes, and
how, thanks to the far-sightedness of one man and the dedication of his team of Miremmas, they have
been rescued and now the population has gone from 4 to 150. [before the red foxes came up with the
bright idea that it would be an easy swim, at low tide, to get to the island and, once there, wend
their bloodthirsty way through the colony, the population had been 800/1000].
The dogs spend periods of 1 week to 6 months living on the island, and since they took up station,
not a single penguin has been killed by a fox.
The idea came to Swampy "I can't remember his real mane when his first Maremma, whose name I can
remember, Odd Ball was so successful in protecting a flock of 13,000 chooks [chickens] and it dawned
upon him that if the field of Odd Ball's care was moved to Middle Island, he would be just as
successful with protecting the penguins as he was with the chooks, and so it has proved.
