Thanks for all that information Nella! Your regs for the sale of raw milk seem to be very similar
to what we now have.

Jewel:

The company tells me that I can use the same vacuum pressure for both Bonnie
and the goats. I haven't messed with the pressure and it seems to work.
I've had to adjust the pulse some. Each inflation, which is the part that
goes on the teat has its own milk and vacuum line. So that is how I could
milk 2 goats at a time if I wished. I would just put 2 inflations on each
goat. I haven't tried that, it's just too crazy to get 2 goats in the barn
and on milking stands at the same time. If I milk more down the road I
might try it, but am just milking 4 now and I like spending time with each
of them. It is a good time for me to look them over and monitor their
overall health.

I don't have hot water at the barn so carry out bucket of hot water to run
through the machine after milking. I add a cleaning solution to it. Every
week I take it all apart and soak the pieces in the cleaning solution. It
takes longer to clean and rinse out everything than it does to milk.

We can sell raw milk here, I just have to provide a disclaimer that the milk
is raw and unpasteurized. It also says that my farm nor product have been
tested by the department of agriculture. The law also requires people to
pick up all milk from the farm. I can't go to farmers markets or deliver.

Most of the cheeses I make are soft cheeses, so it is a matter of heating
the milk to different temps and adding cultures. It usually has to set for
several hours and then it is drained through cheese cloth. Some of it hangs
so that more whey can drip out. There are several different websites where
I order the cultures. I also use rennet and citric acid in several cheese
recipes. I've made a few aged cheeses, but don't have consistent results
with it. I usually make crème fresh, chevre, fromage blanc and mozzarella.
I've also done cottage cheese and ricotta. I also purchase cultures for
making yogurts.

Soap making is a rather long and detailed process. It can be tricky because
you are using lye, which is harmful if it makes contact with skin. True
soap is a combination of fat, lye and a liquid. It is a chemical reaction
when certain amounts of these ingredients are combined. I read books and
did a lot of online research before attempting it. I also helped a friend,
before trying it on my own. I don't know what recorded books you have
access to, but there is one in our BARD collection called Hand Crafted Soap,
which is very good and has good recipes.

I hope that helps.

Nella

Nella! One thing that you didn't mention is do you decrease the vacuum
pressure when milking the goats?
You also said that you could milk 2 goats at a time with your 4-cup cluster
if you wished. On the 4-cup clusters that I know that would be impossible
as all 4 cups are connected to one milk line that delivers the milk to the
can or vat. It sounds to me as though your cluster is quite different with
the 4 cups being separate or, at least, joined in pairs that each have an
individual milk line!
Do you collect the milk into a vacuum bucket and do you have access to hot
waterfor cleaning down etc?
Here in New Zealand, I believe the regulations on the supply and purchase of
raw milk are being
relaxed: and not before time if you ask me, but the supplier & purchaser
have to sign a document stating that said supplier is licensed to sell raw
milk and to obtain the license, the dairy has had to go through a very
expensive process to meet a zillion health requirements, and that the
purchaser is aware of the risks, small as they are.

Could you describe how you make cheese and soap?
I imagine that you dried Bonny off about 6 weeks ago!
I admire how you can keep goats and a garden at the same time! When I had
goats, and I am still hoping that I will again, even though the garden was
separate from the goat pasture, they always managed to break in and devour
the goodies that were there!

I didn't know cows and goats had the same vacume pressure and pulsation
rate, or can your machine switch between the two?

Jewel:

So good to talk with you again. I sure hope you will send out one of your
entertaining stories soon.

The milking machine I have has 4 separate cups and each cup has a switch so
it can be turned off or on. So when I milk the goats I turn off 2 of the
cups. I could actually milk 2 goats at a time, but it is easier to just get
1 in the barn and in place at a time. As you know goats can be quite
mischievous.

When I milk the cow I just have all 4 cups turned on. If 1 of Bonnie's
teats were injured or something I could have 3 cups turned on.

Bonnie's teats and the goats teats are about the same size. I do have 1 doe
who has very small teats and I had to order 2 smaller cups for her. I can
easily change out the cups, so it works very well. I believe you can order
larger cups for larger breeds of cows. Bonnie is a Jersey so rather small.

The goats all kidded in January and there were 5 boys and only 1 girl. I
have a couple of the boys sold already and am still advertising the rest. I
plan on keeping the 1 girl, she is very cute. She is a fawn color with
white spots; everyone says she looks like a fawn.

Bonnie is due to calf in a week or so and I'm watching her closely. I
have a big stall ready for her and all the supplies I think I might need.
She seems happy and healthy. This will be her 5th calf, so she should know
what she is doing.

So far I've been able to sell most of the milk. I've put fliers around town
and ads on craigslist. It seems that most of the customers are being
referred by other customers. If I don't sell all the milk I just make
cheese. I've also been making and selling goats milk soap. One of my
customers raises chickens for meat and eggs, she and I have been trading.
She goes to a local farmers market and will take the soap for me. I can
also put out cards at her booth. We are not allowed to sell raw milk at the
market.

This same woman is interested in buying the calf. They raise grass fed
beef. They want the calf if it is a bull to raise for market and if it is a
heifer they want her to add to their herd.

So far I'm happy with my little venture. I'm working out a few kinks as I
go along, but over all things are going very well.

I hope everyone else is good and I want updates on everyone.

Nella

YIPPEE! It is great to have you back Nella! As you know, I have been
keeping a little abreast of what you are doing through a third party, but I
am interested in your cross species dual milking machine as I had,
previously, never heard of such a device.

There are a few things that I don't understand. As cows have 4 teats and
goats 2, do you have 2 clusters, one of 2 cups and the other of 4? or do
you have a 2-cup cluster and milk 2 teats on the cow and when the udder is
empty on that side, attach the cluster to the remaining 2, but I don't think
that this would be very efficient because once the milk starts to flow,
wouldn't the uncupped teats drip? or do you just use the 4 cup for both
having it resting on what is called, in New Zealand anyway, a claw? It
wouldn't do any favours for the goat's udder to have the unused part of the
cluster just dangling.
Via the third party mentioned above, you said that goats have much larger
teats than a cow! If this is correct, US bred goats and cows are opposite
to any that I have ever seen. Like so many other things, are southern
hemisphere goats and cows wicky-werka to their northern hemisphere cousins?
I am intrigued by your address: jelly bean farm! was this name your
creation or is that the name that the property came with?
