[Ag-eq] garden

Tracy, Canning really isn't that hard. I use the hot bath method, not a
pressure cooker. There are some things that cannot be done in the hot bath.

Sounds like you need to be eating groundhog. Lol

I planted 5 little figs this spring. One died, but 4 are looking good.
They are very small, so sure it will be a long time before I get any fruit.
The little fruit trees are still looking good, but again it will be a few
years.

I need to start planting my fall garden too.

Something has been taking bites out of the tomatoes. It's very annoying.

Nella

Wow Nella, cantaloupe! And canning! I always thought canning was
complicated, but maybe it's easier than I thought. Are you using a pressure
cooker/canner?

The damn groundhog destroyed most of my squashes, though I've gotten a
couple nice cucumbers. The pole beans are starting to set beans, and it
looks like a good crop.
I got a fig from my fig bush! It's only a couple feet tall, so I didn't
expect much, but I got one, and there are a few more coming on.
The 2nd raspberry crop is ripe, and I'm getting ready to plant my fall
crops--spinach, lettuce, and such. Gotta figure out how to protect them
from the varmint.

Glad to hear your young animals are doing well.
Tracy

I'm so excited I'm actually getting cantaloupes from the garden. They are
one of my favorite things and so far I've gotten 8 of them. There are still
several small ones out there. I'm still getting a few cucumbers and some
tomatoes.

I've been learning to can things this summer. I've canned 16 pints of
tomatoes so far. I have 7 quarts and 8 pints of pickles. I also pickled 6
pints of beets. Earlier in the year my aunt gave me black berries and I
made 6 pints of jam and 6 quarts of pie filling.

I'm going to get apples from the local orchard and try making apple butter.

What is everyone else up to?

Oh, Sally Jo the calf is growing like a weed. She is very lively and enjoys
dashing around the pasture when the weather is cool. She is nibbling at
grain now and putting her mouth on the grass. She is fat and shiny.

I have one little goat from this spring; she was the only doe. She's 7
months old now and very healthy. She's not getting quite as tall as I
thought she would, but she is also fat and shiny.

Well, that's about all that's going on around here.

There were another 3 lambs born overnight: 1 set of twin ewes and a
singleton ram.
I have now 4 ewes with 8 lambs.
Of the 6 remaining ewes, 2 had still birth lambs, leaving 4 and I am pretty
sure that I have a couple among them that are not in lamb, or when they
stood still for a moment or 2, I seized the opportunity to have a quick feel
but I couldn't find any udder development.
