[Ag-eq] New Hampshire

No groundhogs in New Zealand Tracy! We do have rabbits and hares, but the former took a severe hit
some years ago when the disease: rhd/rcv Rabbit hemmorhagic Disease/Rabbit Colicci Virus was,
illegally, imported from Australia and released among the free-born wild population.
For the first few years, it was, extremely, affective but sufficient rabbits recovered after being
infected that immunity is now rife and the population, although not as bad as it was, is getting to
plague proportions once again.
However, there is a method of keeping your garden safe from the varmints, excluding squirrels I am
sorry to say and I should have thought of this earlier: Invest in an electric fence that could be
powered by a conventional unit run off the main electricity grid or it could be a solar-powered
battery.
Use 2 wires: the lower of which is just an inch or so from the ground and another about the same
distance above.
Of course, with the lower wire being so close to the earth, you will have to keep it clear of weed
growth.
Oh! another tick in NZ's large book of plusses, we don't have squirrels!
Now we come to birds that won't be troubled in the least by electric fences. Go along to your local
toy or farm supply store , and see if you can get some balloons that look like birds of prey:
eagles or hawks: Fill these with helium gas and then tie one end of a string to your bird and the
other end to a stake, allowing sufficient string for the birds to float over the garden without
getting tangled!
You could even get hold of a recording of the alarm call of the particular avian nuisance and play
this from time to time, or there is the bang--bang--bang gas bird scarer.
Use all of these suggestions and your skies will be empty and the ground devoid of chewing pests,
with, as I said above, the exception of squirrels who will have your entire crop to themselves.
They will be so fat and complacent that you will be able to catch them by hand, place them in
comfortable squirrel bedsits, and then you will ring fishing and game who will come and release them
in Alaska or if they can't be bothered doing that, will make tasty tree rat pies for the poor and
hungry, so even pesky squirrels have done some good!

Nella and Jewel, this is a great plan! Look out NZ, here we come! Unless
NZ also has groundhogs, or something similar.

Move from New Zealand!? not in a million years. I would suggest that
you'll come here. We have a much kinder climate, there is room to breathe,
particularly here in Southland, which is as I oft say "New Zealand's
best-kept secret!" and long may it remain so.
We have no wild predators, we have no snakes and the most poisonous iraknid
that we have is the Katapo, which is only, mildly venomous and, is mostly,
found on the coast. Although I must say that our cousins across the ditch,
the Ausies, have sent us a few of their nasties: spiders that is:
that are interbreeding with our native Katapo and making it more venomous
than it has been to date.
Have I whet your interest and should I start looking around for land for a
commune and make enquiries about chartering a Lear jet?
I would offer the BlanchRanch but it is not big enough, but how many places
are like this? As I said earlier, room to breathe and yet I can, or rather,
could walk into Gore, an excellent shopping town, in little more than 10
minutes.

Tracy, Jody and I were joking around and said we should start our own
agriculture cohousing group.

We decided you can supervise the gardens. I will supervise the dairy and
Jody says she's an experienced pooper scooper. Lol

If Zac moves in I will probably have to give up the dairy position and take
up dish washing or something.

Oh, and we think Jewel needs to move from New Zealand so we will have an
endless supply of entertainment.

What are your husbands skills and interests, we will need to find him a job.

Thanks Nella. I put in those search terms, and found some very interesting
stuff.
Finding like-minded people isn't easy. It's why I love this group so much.
I'm trying to find like-minded people around here through Meetup, but
haven't been successful so far. Their website isn't the most
screen-reader-friendly, plus some things that interest me are far away. I
think I'll have to create my own meetup, and see if anyone shows up.

Tracy, I first saw it mentioned in a book and then got online and just put
in cohousing and farming or agriculture. I also tried cohousing and horses.
Some places are called cohousing and some are called home owners
associations. I looked up the differences on those too.

Some of the communities have websites and I saw a directory for finding
cohousing. It seems to be a new trend and different communities are based
on different interests.

It seems that the cohousing groups focus on participating in the community,
but also having personal privacy. Some of them require that you spend so
many hours helping the community in some way. They seem to do their own
maintenance and such. Also everything is voted on.

The home owner association groups seemed to have less structure; you just
pay so much to live there. I'm not sure I totally understood everything and
every community is different.

I thought it would be a good way to meet like minded people. I've found
that to be the hardest thing here.

Nella, that does sound interesting. Where have you been reading about it,
so I can read, too?

Tracy, I've been reading about cohousing and home owner associations that
are farm an agriculture based. I think it is a very interesting concept.
People have private housing, but share pasture, garden spaces and barns.

Do any of you know about this, or maybe know somebody who lives in one?

Hi Jody.
So you're living in New Hampshire now? How is that working out, for a
person who doesn't drive? I ask because I'm considering places I might want
to live when I retire. I have retired friends who have moved to New
Hampshire, but they drive, and that makes a difference.
I think what I'd want is a place like Nella or Jewel have, some place with
some space, but close enough to town to be able to walk places.
Tracy
