[Ag-eq] New Hampshire

Wow, I'm sure if I decide to live in your beautiful country I will get
myself into all kinds of trouble. We here in Arkansas kind of speak our own
language already. So life in a new country would be very interesting.

A pottle which can also be called a tub is, generally, a plastic
container for a small amount of
food such as yogurt, jam etc, but in the top third of New Zealand, it is
what soft fruits
such as raspberries/strawberries/blueberries are packed in, but that
container changes to a chip when you are in the middle third and then is a
punnet in the lower.
For a country as small as New Zealand, we have many such names specific to a
region such as, a barn in which cows are milked is, in most parts, a cow
shed, while here in the south, it is, or was, a byre; a simple cottage,
usually on the beach is, in Southland or on the *coast: that is:
the West Coast, a crib, while in climes further north it is a bach.
I said * simple, and so it used to be, but the name bach, pronounced batch,
not bach as for Johan Sebastian, are getting pretty fancy these days and the
name is being applied to the family's luxurious holiday home, but the simple
polite clad bach with its outside * dunny still exists: * dunny: outside
detached lavatory.
These local names reflect the origin of most of the European settlers of
that region; as Southland/Otago was settled by, mostly, Scottish
immigrants, we retain many of the scottish names in our local dialect;
also, Southlanders were, and still can be by those with a sharp ear, be
identified by the fact that they pronounce the letter r with a definite
burr, e.g bird is birrrd, rather as Americans do: not a rolled "r" as the
scots do, but, very clearly, ennunciated.
This burr is not found, so strongly in the younger population, but is still
very definite in the older.
Some people maintain that they can hear other regional dialects: but they
are too slight for me to pick up.
All that I have said above will be very familiar to all of you statesiders!

      Jewel

Hi again Jewel,

I remember you also said that a drink container was a potelle. You also had
a kiwi name for a duffel bag
