[Ag-eq] Lilies

Tracy my Mom makes the best pickled beets ever and I followed her recipe
exactly. I hope they are as good as hers.

Last year I used a different recipe and they were good, but not as good as
Mom's.

Nella, I'm sitting here drooling! I love pickled beets! And my Grandma
made peach preserves that were out of this world.
Did you see the blackberry jam and walnut cake recipe in the Contrary Farmer
post that was sent out recently? If not, I've saved it.

Tiger lilies are real lilies, but don't have any smell. The ones with the
smell are the Oriental lilies, which are often much bigger than the tiger
lilies. I have a variety called Muscadet which is short and has a nice
scent, but the tall ones are the best, at least in my book.

Tracy your lilies sound beautiful I've never seen one that gets 5 feet
tall. I only have day lilies and tiger lilies. I think tiger lilies might
be a type of day lily, but not sure.

So I've been canning all kinds of things here. I've made both blackberry
and strawberry jam. I also canned a few quarts of blackberry pie filling.
Now I've started on the pickles. So far I've made pickled beets and bread
and butter pickles. Yesterday I cann 7 pints of a chutney.

I plan on making more pickles and hope to buy both peaches and apples when
they are in season. I would like to make some peach jam and some apple
butter. My tomato plants are loaded with green fruit, so hopefully I will
be able to cann some tomatoes and make some salsa.

My lilies are starting to bloom. Last night, there were only 2 blooms open
out front, but the smell was wafting all over. Makes taking the dog out a
whole new experience.

The lilies I have with the best smell are called Silk Road. They're at
least 5 feet tall, with big, white flowers. I also have some called
Stargazer, because the flowers face upward instead of outward, like most
lilies do. They're nice too, but the Silk Road are the best so far.

The munchers don't like lilies. The only thing that attacks them are
aphids, which I wash off with the hose. A pesky wild morning glory also
tries to climb them. I'm always yanking that darn thing out.

Tracy
