This is what I wrote to Deslie, my sister.
When you, finally, get to Gore, don't forget to bring the quinces. Keith doesn't want them, but he
thinks that the sheep will. They, really, seem to be fruit hounds.
I put a plastic bag of pears for Keith in one of the feed troughs in the barn. It has a wooden lid
on it so I thought: silly me: that, if the sheep came into the barn, they would not pinch them.
Well! when I put the bag in the feed trough and dropped the wooden lid, I must have left one of the
handles sticking out because when Keith collected it, one of the handles was torn off the bag.
I told him that I would keep the sheeps' minds sharp by hiding quinces all over the paddock that
they could hunt for; even digging a deep hole and secreting a quince at the bottom: not hunt the
slipper which, probably they wouldn't: Guideon would, but not the sheep, but the quince! and
people, myself included, before I became familiar with them, have the notion that sheep are
brainless! Maybe, other peoples are, but mine have brains a-plenty and they know how to use'm!
