January 4

Hello everyone and a very happy new year!

I left a new Voice Box message today. You can listen to some updates by calling into it at:
Call 641-715-3900
extention # 601592

Remember our meeting on January 19. We will hold this meeting on the phone, via conference call. The info is at the end of this message.

As a followup to our Lunch Meeting last month, we donated over 30 items, pairs of gloves and hats, to a local shelter. We brought in $147 to the chapter from the 50-50, and we all remember Richard's powerful testimony of why the NFB is so important to him and those we are here to serve.

You should have seen by now Barbara's State Newsletter. Some good articles in it, including a quote from Richard about our chapter, and even an article I wrote on first-time attendees at the convention.

The newest Braille Monitor came out this week and is awesome, some very good articles. If you're not getting the Braille Monitor, please get on NFB.org this weekend and subscribe. It's the most important punlication the NFB has, and we all need to get it.

Did you see Richard's post on Ohio Talk, about the Echo and Alexa and Newsline? The December Presidential Release also talked a lot about Alexa and how we can get Newsline and other NFB materials using Alexa.

No computer? The library we meet at has many computers you can use on the first floor. Or, and kudos to Charlie and Colleen for getting computers from computersfortheblind.org. Fact is, people communicate and work together via email, especially NFB members. With a small fee you can get a laptop or desktop with Jaws and other programs installed, from www.computersfortheblind.org<http://www.computersfortheblind.org>

Committees

To be a functioning and effective chapter, we need functioning and effective committees. Please get back to me with your preference on a committee to serve on.

Thanks to Colleen who will chair our Events Committee. We just had our Holiday Event, and the other one is scheduled for July 20 our Chapter Picnic.

I will chair our Publicity and Social Media committee. We will have a new Facebook page active in a few days.

Our other committees:
Membership
Fundraising
Outreach
Newsline

Future Meetings: Can you call me or send me an email, telling me what topics and speakers would be of value to you, at our meetings? We may have a speaker or just a topic to discuss, but what would you most be interested in?

Meeting Idea: I was contacted by a guy who leads bird walks in the Metroparks like Seiberling. He would teach how to identify birds by their call. Would anyone be interested in this as an outing?

The NFB Pledge
I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its Constitution.
