In addition to weekends Saturday and Sunday free rides on regular line buses and SCAT/ADA in Summit County, more news for this week!

The Akron Metro Regional Transit Authority is providing free fares for all passengers from Aug. 14-20 in recognition of Metro passengers winning the Community Champion Award from the Akron Urban League.

All Metro services, including fixed-route and demand response, will be free.

Metro RTA said that the annual nominations allow for community members to receive recognition for making a difference in Summit County, and the public transportation provider said it was "proud beyond measure to nominate a group of persons who kept the community moving through the numerous challenges of the pandemic — their riders."

“We recognize that safe, accessible, reliable and equitable transportation is necessary for our riders to get where they need to keep our community thriving and moving forward,” Metro CEO Dawn Distler said in a statement. “It’s a privilege to provide essential services to essential people. Thank you for your trust in us, it does not go unnoticed.”

Akron Urban League hosted its annual gala Saturday at the John S. Knight Center. Several fixed-route and demand response METRO passengers were invited to attend to be recognized and honored.

“Community engagement comes in many forms. When we put the call out for community awards nominations, we encountered so many deserving people and organizations who are making a difference in their respective neighborhoods,” Akron Urban League President and CEO Teresa LeGrair said in a statement. “During the selection process, we were challenged to choose from a pool of such outstanding nominations.

“All of the nominees have put their needs behind being in service to others, which is only a fraction of what makes them deserving of recognition. Our honorees understand that the gift of kindness, combined with action, is what makes a difference in people’s lives. The Akron Urban League is excited to recognize their excellent work and celebrate the impact they are making!”
