` hello
My name is Jordan Moon, and I am currently attending Arizona state
university and i am visually impaired and can provide some valvuable advice to
professors who deal with blind or visually impaired students.
1. Make sure the student and the professor are on the same page on how
matter of work presented in the course will be caried out by both indivisuals.
2. Make sure the professor makes the student feel confortable , not allowing
the student to feel afraid to ask for help or special accommodations for
the course.
3. there must be a pre agreement between the professor and the student
before the heavy work load of a course developes on how both sides will work
together.
4. the professor must put himself/herself in the mind-set of a visually
impaired or blind student in order to sense the realistic capability of things
and assignments that can be currectly done.
5. on assignments that require a particular amount of vision in order to
complete, the two parties should sit down and determine an alternative way of
conveying that same information that particular assignment is asking for.
6. Even though it is hard for many professors to do, they should have an
exam for a course prepaired at least a week before the actual exam so that the
disability resource center has the proper amount of time to conver the
material into a format better suited for that individual: if not ready by this
time, professors should be willing to have a student take the exam at a later
notice agreed upon by the professor, DRC, and the student.
7. Converted text may take longer for the student to obtain so professors
should try to become as lenient and understanding as possible.
8. make sure when a power point or notes are posted in front of the class,
that it is read aloud so that the student has a equal opportunity to take valid
notes.
9. alternitive ways of submitting assignments may be neccessary, like those
assignments that students turn in during class, may have to be emailed to a
professor at a later time, unless both can come up with a different way of
doing this.
10. most importantly, make sure the student is treated just like everyone
else, and not singled out, or even looked upon at all: the have a brain just
like everyone else.
Please let me know what you think
I look forward to hearing from you
