TRANSCRIBERREPORTS TO: Director of Production

PURPOSE
To transcribe books, magazines, and other print material into braille, large 
print, and other accessible formats.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1.. Prepare braille transcriptions that are complete, accurate, timely, 
and formatted according to the rules of braille, to NBP standards, and to 
customer specifications.
  2.. Understand and effectively utilize all reference documents, such as 
customer specifications, English Braille American Edition, NLS Instruction 
Manual, Braille Formats: Principles of Print to Braille Transcription, etc.
  3.. Develop and maintain complete and accurate written instructions for 
the transcription of recurring projects.
  4.. Maintain computer files in accordance with all NBP naming conventions 
and file locations.
  5.. Maintain an organized working environment.
  6.. Assist in the training of less-experienced transcribers.
DUTIES

  1.. Transcribe the electronic files of print material into Braille using 
the Duxbury Translation software, scanning or typing print material into an 
electronic format if necessary.
  2.. Typeset the inkprint for title pages, spines, book cards, large-print 
projects.
  3.. Work with proofreaders and prepress support staff to make all 
necessary corrections to braille material.
  4.. Provide in-house support and finishing work for material transcribed 
by outside contracted transcribers.
  5.. Adhere to all quality-assurance stands and procedures.
  6.. Operate all relevant machinery, such as computer Braille translation 
software, scanners, embossers, plate-embossing-devices, stereotypers, 
printers, dot knockers, etc.
  7.. Perform other duties as designated by the Lead Transcriber or 
Production Supervisor.
PREREQUISITES
Associate's Degree or higher OR at least three years' work experience.

COMPENSATION
Starting salary negotiable: $30,000/year entry-level to $45,000/year fully 
qualified and experienced.
