Tactile Identification by the Blind Improved Through Usage of Textured 
Images

Information published by researchers from Laboratoire de sychologie et 
neurocognition (LPNC) in the journal of experimental psychology revealed 
that tactile images are important in aiding blind children improve 
tactile identification. These children who are deprived of natural 
stimuli for seeing are unable to identify images due to lack of suitable 
material.

The study made use of 23 blind children who were born blind or who 
acquired the condition within their first year of living to determine 
the ability of tactile images to improve tactile recognition of various 
objects and shapes.

The children were asked to identify various images that were known to 
them as a test. The study findings revealed that the blind children 
found it easier to identify textured images compared to images made of 
other materials. Better tactile recognition was also observed in 
children who were presented with the textured images on regular 
occasions during their early stages of development.
