Visually-impaired students call lack of Braille script in SLC unfair
Visually-impaired students appearing in School Leaving Certificate (SLC)
exams have complained of inconvenience while writing answers in lack of
Braille script.According to the Office of the Controller of Examinations
(OCE), blind students can get an assistant writer but the writing helps
are not allowed to draw figures and diagrams even in subjects such as
Science, Social Studies, and Environment, Health and Population.
There is no system of taking exams using Braile script in SLC exam
although courses taught in Braille at some schools."I am sorely
disappointed as I have to skip questions that involve drawing maps and
figures. This will surely decrease my marks and percentage in the SLC
result," said Anamika Chaudhary, of Laborotary School in Kirtipur of
Kathmandu.

Wilmington Public Library and DVI are creating a 3D map for the visually
impaired
About this time last year, folks from the
Division for the Visually Impaired (DVI)
and the
Wilmington Public Library
were in talks about possible projects to help the community?s visually
impaired.
They had a eureka moment after
Derek Alexander
, DVI?s entrepreneurial specialist and business consultant on
employment, helped a visually impaired woman working in an
administrative position by making her a tactile map of a desktop phone.
With it, she knew how to use the phone more easily.
Alexander and
Carl Shaw
, the library?s inspiration space coordinator (that means he?s in charge
of providing outreach and career development resources), talked about
similarly using 3D printing to make downtown Wilmington more navigable.

3D printer creates braille maps for visually impaired
Rutgers University have created a Braille map from a 3D printer for
visually impaired people to easily navigate their surroundings.
Describing the map the professors said that the maps are a form of GPS
for the blind and visually impaired.

Twitter wants its users who have visual impairments to become more
involved with user images, which have become very common with tweets, in
a way like they never could before.
People who use screen readers or assistive technology to read Twitter
will be able to read images to ?see? what the image is. According to
Tech News Today, users who upload photos to Twitter along with their
tweets will have the option of adding descriptive information about
those images using alternative text, or ?alt text.?

Twitter Makes Photos Accessible to the Visually Impaired
....
Once enabled, when you compose a tweet with an image, a button will
appear in the lower left corner of the image that says 'Add
description.' Tapping on that button allows you to add a description of
up to 420 characters ? three times the normal length of a tweet. Unlike
some recent innovations at Twitter, photo descriptions will be available
as part of Twitter's REST API and Twitter Cards, which means third-party
developers can add the feature to their own Twitter clients too.
Twitter should be commended for what is an important, and I think will
prove to be a popular, feature. Not only does it bring photography to
the visually impaired, but it also brings text shots, which have been
widely used to get around Twitter's 140-character limit, but criticized
for being inaccessible, to a wider audience
.
Here's a short video I made with a text shot of one of my recent reviews:

This artist 'visualizes' world for the blind
Vadodara: This 29-year-old artist from the city paints not what he sees
but what the blind feel. And, his sole aim behind creating artworks is
to create awareness about eye donation.
At Bhavsing Bambhaniya's exhibition, the visually challenged also have
the opportunity to relish some artworks.
Bambhaniya, a former student of M S University's Faculty of Fine Arts,
now paints to create awareness about eye donation. Since childhood,
Bambhaniya has been concerned about the difficulties faced by disabled
people. He would spend hours understanding their state of mind.

Audio Description (AD) makes visual images accessible for people who are
blind or have low vision. Using words that are succinct, vivid, and
imaginative, media describers convey the visual image from television
and film that is not fully accessible to a significant segment of the
population (more than 21 million Americans experience significant vision
loss).
The signing of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility
Act has spawned a virtual cottage industry for the development of
description for broadcast television.

3:45 pm-5:15 pm The ADA + 504 + 508 = Accessibility -
Chaired by Pat Sheehan, Section 508 Coordinator,
Department of Veterans Affairs.
How does existing law at the federal level support audio description?
The Americans With Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973 (as amended) and Section 508 of the Workforce
Rehabilitation Act mandate accommodations for people with disabilities.
Experts in access and legislation will outline how these important
legislative actions provide for audio description. Panelists include:
Beth Bienvenu, Director of AccessAbility, National
Endowment for the Arts (via Skype)
Anita Walker, Executive Director, Massachusetts Cultural
Council (invited)
Mark Urban, Section 508 Coordinator, Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (invited)
5:15 pm-6:00 pm Mentoring Meet-Up -
Chaired by Susan Glass, ADP Steering Committee.
For the second time, the ACB Audio Description Project is offering its
unique "mentorship" program: sighted attendees of the Audio Description
Project Conference will be paired with a blind or visually impaired
mentor. The best describers develop an understanding of the audience
for whom they are providing a critical service. What better opportunity
for such interaction than at the ACB Conference and Convention, where
some 1500 blind people will likely be present? (Sunday evening on July
3 and mornings on Monday and Tuesday, July 4 and 5 are kept open for
attendance at ACB Convention plenary sessions.)
At this meet-and-greet session, ADP Conference attendees will have the
opportunity to meet and be mentored by an ACB member/description
enthusiast and join him/her for the opening plenary session of the ACB
Conference and Convention AND at least two other activities during the
sessions over the next two mornings-e.g., touring the exhibit hall
together, attending an affiliate meeting or an additional ACB general
session, taking a walk, eating a meal together, or watching an audio
described film. We hope that these interactions will give you lots of
practical experience interacting with a blind person-and you may forge a
new friendship and increase understanding between the sighted and the
blind communities.

Library Company & Gershman Y Partner for Archival Exhibition and
Performance Art Event on April 20
Visual art and performance art come together in a special program
presented jointly by the Gershman Y and the Library Company of
Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 20. The evening begins at 5:00 PM at
the Library Company of Philadelphia (1314 Locust Street) with an
exhibition viewing and reception for*/Common Touch: The Art of the
Senses in the History of the Blind/*, a multi-sensory exhibition curated
by Philadelphia installation artist *Teresa Jaynes*. /Common Touch/
explores the nature of perception through original works by Jaynes and
historical collections that document the education of the blind in the
19th century.
Following the viewing and reception, the evening moves to the Gershman Y
(corner of Broad and Pine Streets) at 6:30 PM for a live performance by
the renowned *Terry Galloway* of */You Are My Sunshine - A Kind of Love
Story/*. Galloway offers her humorous perspective on life after
receiving a cochlear implant and being thrust into a world of sound.
/You Are My Sunshine/ is a comic, sometimes moving, sometimes profane
exploration of what happens to a woman after she literally regains her
senses. The performance will be followed by a discussion with Galloway
and *Haverford College Professor Kristin Lindgren, PhD*. Lindgren was a
key organizer of Haverford College?s 2012 exhibition, /What Can a Body
Do?/ which explored disability through the visual arts, poetry, and
scholarship.
Admission to the exhibition viewing and reception, as well as the
performance, is free, but advance registration is required by calling
215-545-4400 or visiting GershmanY.org

Impact Challange
Message-ID: <570E0AD7.8010409@online.no>
Hi,
Thought this could be of interest to us all. Benetech has a new
initiative directed, I think, at publishers and other content
providers. That is that books etc are accessible from the start. That
is not "retro-fitting" content. (liked that term)
Not up on history of universal design, but hope this is a more
concerted effort directed directly at publishers.
Born Accessible
"The digital revolution and ongoing advances in technology have made it
possible to get more content, in more ways, to more people. At the same
time, they have also given publishers and content creators a new digital
imperative?if content is ?born digital,? it can?and should?be ?born
accessible.? ... "

Facebook Helps Blind People ?See? Photos With AI
Facebook rolled out a new accessibility feature to help the blind or
visually impaired people ?see? photos on their news feed....
Introducing /automatic alternative text/, it enables Facebook?s AI to
generate description for photos to be read aloud.
?This is possible because of Facebook?s object recognition technology,
which is based on a neural network that has billions of parameters and
is trained with millions of examples,? said Facebook in a blog post
.
According to BBC ,
Facebook?s AI can now recognize over 80 objects and activities.

Hi,
Sending links to an exhibition about two artist and tactile art plus,
video about it - excerpt from the explanation with the vimeo video which
I thought was very interesting.
"Prior to the mid-1800s, tactile interaction was commonplace for
visitors experiencing collections of art, but as museums of art evolved,
rules forbidding touch became the norm. In some cases, these were to
protect artwork that truly was not meant to be touched, but in large
part these norms had nothing do with preservation and everything to do
with nineteenth century politics of gender, race and class control."
This new gallery show encourages you to get hands-on with art
When we think of going to an art gallery
,
we tend to expect to be walking around, looking at pieces with our eyes
and considering them from a few feet back. With a show opening on June
24, one West Hollywood gallery is challenging those preconceptions.
/Please Touch the Art/ at Cantor Fine Art
features a
group of artists? works which all share one thing in common: an
invitation to get a little hands-on. They call the idea "tactile art."
As the gallery?s co-owner, Sam Cantor, told LAist
, inspiration for
the show grew out of a story he was told by Laguna Beach artist Andrew
Myers. Myers specializes in crafting elaborate mosaic-like pieces from
screws which he arranged at various heights and then painted, creating
portraits with depth and texture evocative of topographical maps?and one
day, a blind stranger walked in and put his hands on the art, almost as
if it were printed in Braille. This lead Myers and Cantor to find the
man, who turned out to be a furniture maker and artist in his own right,
George Wurtzel, about whom Cantor made a short documentary, which you
can see below. The experience left Cantor fascinated with the idea of
tactile art and using the sense of touch in art and story-telling.
Next up for Wurtzel and the tactile art movement is a project to convert
a former grape crushing barn in Napa into the first Tactile Art Center,
a space fully dedicated to encouraging the blind to create, observe and
sell art.

All in the Family: Artist Larry Walker Debuts at His Daughter?s Gallery
"The earliest works in the exhibition are from his 1960s Children of
Society Series. The artist?s Remnant Series is made up of acrylic
abstracts with collaged remnants of paper. When Larry started painting
again in Atlanta, he continued the Figurative Series he had started in
California. That work evolved into the Blindfold Series, a response to
learning he had glaucoma.
?Contemplating the notion that I might go blind at some point in time, I
started doing these figures that had blindfolds on. In another series, I
did figures that had no eyes,? Larry said in the BOMB conversation."
