The Usual Rule Is Hands Off, But DAM's Tactile Tables Wants Everyone To
'See' Visual Art
"Blind since birth, there?s nothing worse for 8-year-old Chloe Poston
than being at a museum where all the signs say ?Do Not Touch.?
A curious child, Poston asks lots of questions and wants to be a doctor
someday. The best way for her to learn is hands on -- an opportunity the
Denver Art Museum recently gave her. The Lakewood third-grader got to
walk right past those ?Do not touch? signs and actually handle some of
the art."

Novel Tactile Designs Go on Show at Bangkok Art and Cultural Center
BANGKOK - A dozen well-known Thai artists who donned blindfolds to draw
alongside visually impaired children are now displaying their tactile
art at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center (BACC) in the Thai capital.
The artists, including Thai National Artist Itthipol Tangchaloke and
cartoonist Chai Rajvatr, last week put on blindfolds and gathered with
20 visually impaired children to create drawings using a velcro pad and
yarn, or Lensen kits, developed by the Thai Klongdinsor Company.

Canadian museum presents exhibit that blind people can "see"
Breakthrough technology by U.S. start up 3DPhotoWorks LLC enables the
visually impaired to experience art on an equal basis with the sighted.
"CMHR is the first museum in the world to showcase three-dimensional
tactile fine art printing developed by 3DPhotoWorks
of Chatham, New York. This recently patented technology is considered a
major breakthrough for people with vision loss ? allowing them to "see"
photographs and fine art with their fingertips.
Inspired by research conducted by neuroscientist Dr. Paul Bach-y-Rita of
the University of Wisconsin, 3D tactile printing is based on the concept
of neuroplasticity. As Dr. Bach-y-Rita's research within the blind
community confirms, "The brain is able to use tactile information coming
from the fingertips as if it were coming from the eyes. That's because
we don't see with our eyes or hear with our ears, these are just the
receptors, seeing and hearing in fact goes on in the brain.""

Learning complex tasks 'SUPERCHARGES' the brain: Difficult skills make
minds more flexible and powerful by linking regions
* Scientists taught sighted people to read Braille - a complex tactile
task
* Found the activity activated the visual cortex, as well as the
tactile one
* Researchers said the finding should lead to a re-think of how brain
works
You might imagine the brain to be divided into specific areas
responsible for processing different senses.
But researchers have now shown how we can 'supercharge' our minds and
break down its barriers so it becomes more flexible.
Scientists taught sighted people to read Braille and found the complex
tactile task surprisingly activated the visual cortex, as well as the
tactile one.

ASU staff and students innovate solutions ... Alternative Format Lab
"?When Braille was created, even when math Braille was created in 1972,
nobody anticipated the advances in sciences like DNA. We almost had to
create her books from scratch.?
Newton helped to develop the process for doing tactile diagrams, which
weren?t even provided when she was a student. One way to do it is to
print complicated graphics onto heat-encapsulated paper, which is then
run through a machine dubbed ?the toaster,? which heats the paper and
raises the ink so the image can be felt. Images also can be embossed."

3D printed tactile picture books entertain and teach visually impaired
children
The digital files for the tactile children?s books have all been made
open source and are available to download via the Tactile Picture
Books?s online library, meaning that just about anyone, from educator,
to parent, can create a book for their visually impaired child.
3D printing has helped those working in the field of visual impairments
make some big advancements. For instance, we learned about pieces of
fine art being turned into tactile 3D printed artworks to be experienced
by the blind, as well as a whole new form of 3D printed music notation
to help visually impaired musicians read music. Just this week as well,
Linespace, a tactile display system using a 3D printer print head meant
to help the blind read maps and images, was unveiled. As the technology
continues to develop there is no doubt that treatments and opportunities
for the visually impaired will also improve.

Visually-impaired students call lack of Braille script in SLC unfair
KATHMANDU, April 1: Visually-impaired students appearing in School

writing answers in lack of Braille script.According to the Office of the

writer but the writing helps are not allowed to draw figures and

Environment, Health and Population.
There is no system of taking exams using Braile script in SLC exam
although courses taught in Braille at some schools."I am sorely
disappointed as I have to skip questions that involve drawing maps and
figures. This will surely decrease my marks and percentage in the SLC
result," said Anamika Chaudhary, of Laborotary School in Kirtipur of

Blind artist records sounds of nature
Juan Pablo Culasso is blind, but he's developed an unusual skill
recording the sounds of nature across South America. CCTV America
travelled exclusively with him, as a guest of the Uruguayan government,
to listen to the world's last truly unexplored continent: Antarctica.
Despite being blind since birth, sound recordist Juan Pablo Culasso
loves to travel. Now, I'm going with him to film a very special mission.
"The first time I ever heard about Antarctica was when I was 12 years
old. I saw a documentary, which showed the expedition of Scott and
Amundsen. I said to myself then that, one day, I would go to that
continent........." Culasso said.
"I don't consider myself an artist in the normal definition of the word.
For me, the artist is nature, and I just capture these moments."
"Behind me is Maxwell Bay, and this is King George Island on the Western
Peninsula. And it is here that Juan Pablo Culasso is undertaking his
pioneering work to capture the sounds of Antarctica.
"My mission is for these invisible sounds to become visible for
everyone," Culasso said.
We received an invitation to visit the neighboring Chinese Great Wall base.
"You are welcome at the Great Wall."
"I was born to do this. To record sounds. To share them. To teach others
that it is possible to enjoy any type of landscape. Without the need to
see it," Culasso said.

Silhouette artist: a master at paper cuts
.... "I started as a kid," Johnson says. "My father did them. He got me
started about age 10. Professionally I've been doing them since about
1986." Johnson did his first job when he was a "starving art student"
and began working at Dolly Parton's amusement park, Dollywood. "I've
been doing them ever since," he says with a laugh.
He says he took to cutting silhouettes quickly, partly because he's
blind in one eye.
"I was fortunate in the fact that I was born blind in one eye. So I see
the world two-dimensional. I don't have binocular vision, like most
people, so I don't see in the round. So I took to it like a fish to water."
He says he averages about 100 silhouettes a day but has been known to do
twice as many. In the decades he's been cutting, he estimates that he's
made more than a million shadow portraits at state fairs, toy stores and
parties across the country. He insists his hands never get sore." ......

Canvases on celluloid
The art film genre can be divided into several subgenres, says cultural
commentator Sadanand Menon. There are descriptive films, like Satyajit
Ray ?s
/The Inner Eye/, that provide historical context to an artist and his or
her creations. Ray?s 1972 documentary on a blind artist and teacher,
Benode Behari Mukherjee, from Visva-Bharati University comes with the
filmmaker?s own sonorous, weighty commentary. Arun Khopkar?s /Figures of
Thought /on Bhupen Khakar, Nalini Malani and Vivan Sundaram, and
/Colours of Absence /on Jehangir Sabavala are the most celebrated and
cerebral documentaries on Indian artists.

Finding Refuge | The story of Hany al Moulia, Syrian Refugee
21-year-old Hany al Moulia is a Syrian refugee who now lives in Regina,
Sask. Al Moulia captured life in a refugee camp in Lebanon in a series
of images, from his little brother's shadow to a makeshift barber shop.
His stunning images record life in a refugee camp that are both
heartbreaking and beautiful, revealing both hope and despair, but what
makes it particularly remarkable is that al Moulia is legally blind. He
suffers from nystagmus, an eye condition that causes rapid eye movement;
in his case, everything is out of focus unless it?s 10 centimetres from
his face.

Seeing in the dark: blind photographers talk about their work
hotography has allowed me to be visually impaired,? says Tanvir Bush.
?You can feel very looked at when you are out with your guide dog taking
pictures and it is good to be able to direct that energy back just by
returning that gaze with your camera. In a very real way, photography
has freed me.?
Bush is one of several photographers from around the globe whose work
features in an intriguing new book from Redstone Press entitled /The
Blind Photographer/. Like many of the practitioners therein, whose work
ranges from staged art photography to straight documentary and
portraiture, she is not totally blind, but suffers from retinitis
pigmentosa, a degenerative disease that leads to loss of peripheral
vision and eventual blindness. ?I had worked previously as a film
producer and had always deferred to the director and cinematographer,?
she says, ?so it was very exciting for me to find my own unique voice
though photography. It was a huge creative breakthrough for me.?
...
Like others in the book, both Smithen and Bush use photography as a
liberating means of self-expression, even though it is not their primary
medium. ?I?m a novelist, first and foremost,? says Bush, ?and
interestingly, it would never enter my mind to consider myself a blind
novelist. Because photography is not the thing I aspire to, I don?t mind
the description so much, but if it was my life the way writing is, I
would not allow anyone to put me in that box.?

Seeing art with eyes shut in new exhibit
Close your eyes. Disavow your sense of sight. Now, get to know a work of
art.
That is the mission of the exhibit ?Let?s Keep in Touch,? which grew out
of Whitney Mashburn?s work as a graduate student in curatorial studies
at University of Louisville. She wanted to tackle the issue of
accessibility in art institutions. Of course, because of the Americans
with Disabilities Act, most public places and businesses now must have
ramps for people who can?t walk and businesses must make accommodations
before people who cannot see or hear.
But what is the extent of an art museum?s duty to accommodate all
visitors so that they can experience art?

Comics Empower brings comic books alive for the blind
If you're a fan of comic books, you can easily take in the sight of the
bright red suit that The Flash wears; the sleek, dark look of the Bat
mobile; or how webs jet out from the palms of Spider Man.
But for those who are blind, reading and enjoying comic books can't
happen the same way. One comic book lover is now helping to change
that. His name is Guy Hasson, and he's the creator of Comics Empower
.

Imagined Narratives: Artist Mark Liam Smith transforms colour-blindness
into strength
Canadian artist Mark Liam Smith has taken the art scene by storm with
his latest body of paintings, Imagined Narratives
. The surreal,
photorealistic paintings are painted in non-local colours, a signature
Smith developed as a result of his colour blindness.
He explained: ?As a colour-blind artist, I long had to rely on
colour-mixing formulas to recreate skin tones. Later in my practice, I
realised that local colours served only to restrict my expression. By
viewing my colour-blindness as a strength rather than a weakness, I?ve
embraced the use of non-local colours to develop my work.?

What pigeons taught us about art
The art world's favorite rule: "Don't Touch the Art," is well
intentioned but can have unintended and harmful side effects. Like the
fact that a blind man feels like he has less access to public artwork
than a pigeon. That is awful, but it doesn't have to be this way.
