<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">Grounds For Sculpture, Hamilton, New Jersey, is featuring “Visions of the Mind” an exhibit of artworks by Michael A. Naranjo, a Native American artist who is blind. His work is found in individual and museum collections around the world, including the Vatican, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and the White House. </font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">Born in 1944, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Mr. Naranjo lost his sight during the Vietman War. However, learning to make things from clay was a natural outgrowth of his artistic spirit; for his mother, Rose, was a celebrated ceramic artist who taught her children and grandchildren the art of pottery.</font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">After returning from Vietnam, Mr.Naranjo attended the California School for the Blind. Then, back in Santa Fe, he began the challenge of sculpting without having sight and with greatly reduced use of his right hand, which also had been injured.</font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">He honed his intuition to the point where he can assess through touch alone whether his pieces have movement, composition, balance, and flow. And it helps that he is intimately familiar with his subjects: a Native American warrior, a hoop dancer, a female nude, a child, a soldier, a bear, or fish, or bird. </font></div>
<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">His style is relatively simple: he uses his fingernails to etch the detail in his sculptures. Tools are impractical since Mr.Naranjo can't see what the end of the tool is doing. Ultimately if a piece doesn't feel right to him, he'll tear it up, perhaps salvaging a single arm or leg. </font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">Mr.Naranjo is a strong advocate for the opportunity to have direct contact with art, which he has made possible through projects such as the touring touchable exhibit he organized at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. He and his wife also have established the Touched by Art Fund at the Santa Fe Community Foundation to enable public school students in New Mexico to visit galleries and museums.</font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">The National Archaeological Museum of Athens began programs for people with vision loss in October 2006, after being introduced to the Art Beyond Sight Collaborative. Its tours include hands-on sessions and discussions. “Now our visually impaired visitors have a chance to touch both original marble antiquities, and clay or bronze replicas,” says Alexandra Christopoulou, who works with the museum’s Department of Public Relations and Educational Programs. </font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;"> </font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">Among the original objects that can be touched are 17 marble statues from Ancient Greece. These items were selected by the curators of the Sculpture Collection and the conservators of the museum from some 10,000 items. When making their selection, the curators and conservators considered if the artworks were representative objects of an important ancient Greek period, and thus would demonstrate the evolution of art; if they represented a variety of themes; and the state of their preservation. The selected pieces include a sarcophagus, portraits, a lion, and kouros statues.</font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">The museum has a number of replicas in its collection for use by its Education Department. About 15 of them also are used in touch tours, including bronze and clay figures. Some replicas, Ms. Christopoulou tells us, were created for sale in the museum’s gift shop; others were made by individual artists and donated to the museum by the Greek Ministry of Culture. An example of the latter is a clay vase, called a cylix, used by the ancients for wine. An exact copy of an original in the museum’s collection, it was made by the official artist of the Ministry of Culture, Thomas Kotsiyannis.</font></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">Most of the museum’s replicas are made of the same material as the originals. However, Ms. Christopoulou notes, even when this is not the case – as with the plaster replica of an archaic kouros – touching the replica enables the visitor to understand the statue’s shape, size, facial features, etc.</font></div>
