well, thanks Patti! Your project sounds wonderful with the Black board! I also appreciate, very much, your insight into fiber through the centuries What inspired me was the myth of Ariadne and the Minatour in Greek Mythology. I thought of that story as I was working on my own projects with a slender needle in my hand, as it flowed in, and out, passing through the fabrics and the objects and beads that I work with. I had been a painter before my sight loss 6 1/2 years ago - then, I began doing very intricate bead working as well as pottery. And, I began to realize I was still doing paintings, but that my tools had been trhnsformed into needles, threads and precious objects! It was quite a revelation to me - I was overwhelmed when I realized that - and the connection that women have with thread and needles - I thought of the harlot in the Bible who saved herself and her family when she hung a scarlet ribbon or cord from her window to let the warriors know her home was protected so that they were not kileed when the invasion began. Now, I will be working to unearth other such stories where a person received guidance, salvation, safety, and revelation because of a thread. If anyone has other stories or examples to share with me, that would be excellent. I will check out the ones Patti has noted - people I had not even thought of before - thanks so much Patti.

The work I do is encrusted bead work - done in layer upon layer of stones, gems, found objects, crystals, beads, etc. The pieces are made into Talismans, and into wall pieces. I have a tailor who does the construction of my many pieces once I have finished my work on them - she is excellent and a perfectionist so the works are glorious on the gallery and museum walls. I will attach a couple photos from the Vision and Revision show that is now up at Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton, PA for those who may be able to see them through technology. The work is all clearly done from a female perspective, using materials that were traditionally "women's work." My themes are based on myth and icons.

  Hi Ann and Linda-
I did not know about the other list serve that you mentioned, Ann. Who is the target "audience"? I am making various cards for NFB members who need a "touch" in our affiliate and I'll be using your Black Board. I need to find the right pen to make a distinctive raised line and we'll see if it works for older people/diabetics with neuropathy. At least, this raised concept and tool will get some exposure.

  Congrats, Lynda!
And regarding your upcoming next project-I am putting in a request or two!
Please think about doing something about Joan of Arc...yes, she wore "boys clothes" and she was one of the world's greatest Generals (even as a teen). But the Standard that she designed and had made was a source of pride to her and rather pretty. Just a thought. Also, when she lived with roalty, she wore the prettiest "girl clothes" that were offered to her.

Also, from the Fifth Century Classical Greece, there is Clytemnestra-the sister of Helen of Troy and one of the main characters in the Odyssey. A very important personality to her times, in her own right.

The Pioneer women who crossed the Plains on foot and in wagons maintained their full skirts the entire way. Quite amazing since they climbed, forded, herded oxen and rode horses. Some of their "attire" is interesting, which would include their sunprotective bonnets, but little could be preserved. Oh-they chose to stay in dresses for privacy and would encircle another woman/Sister as she bathed, birthed, etc-using their full skirts for her seclusion and their own privacy as they toileted.

  That's all folks!

  Patty

    Hi Ann,
My thanks for the eXCITING updates! So much GOOD to hear about, which is always so welcome.

Today is the final day of the Vision and Revision exhibition at the first gallery. Then, on Saturday, it gets delivered to the second and final destination. It opens at Jameson Hospital in New Castle, PA on April 17 and is there till July 5. That is the end of the project.

Now, I will be putting my creative efforts into developing a new body of work for my own one person exhibition, Journey of a Thread, for the next year or two - I will be creating mixed media fiber works for this show. I am using for my inspiration, myths and stories of thread, ribbons, cords as metaphors in literature - from ancient times to the present. I have a lot of research to do, lots of things to read, and digest to create the work that will grow out of my reading and research. Literature is rich in imagery that I can translate into my own work.

Best to you and thanks for keeping me in the loop of good information.

      Hooray! a birding book!
Do you have the Bard Owl who says,"Who cooks for you?" or the wood thrush who says "where are you? Here I am."

doesn't matter -anything will be fun!

        Good morning,
I am forwarding a conversation started on Art Beyond Sight Museums list, also hosted on NFB's site.
        artbeyondsightmuseums at nfbnet.org
I thought you guys might find it interesting and have something to add.

I am hard at work on my Backyard Birder, it is a book featuring ten noisy urban and rural birds common throughout North America. I will be posting some updates on my progress on my blog too. http://www.SensationalBooks.com/blog
It will have full color pictures and it will be fully embossed. If you scroll to the bottom of the blog page there is a "Follow" button which will send a notice when a new post is up.

Today I am going to post an essay by our own Deborah Kent Stein. It is an inspiring piece and reminds me that what we do is important. Thanks for that, Debbie!

Congratulations to Lynda on all her success with her exhibit. I am sure it will continue to send ripples throughout the art world.

          Hello,

My name is Elin Meliska and I am developing a self-guided touch tour for blind and low vision visitors at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum. I'm totally new at this and was hoping some seasoned pros could offer some help.

          * Does anyone have experience writing visual descriptions of objects? Or do most museums contract this out?

          * Do any other museums offer a self-guided touch tour? If so, what are some of the challenges or strengths you have encountered?

          * How do you advertise your programs and what community relationships have you found successful?

Thank you so much for your help. Any and all advice is much appreciated!

          Elin
