you are in Orlando this week we have a drop in art room with lots of things to
explore. I think you are here Chris, correct? Did you come in today? We are
open Wednesday too from 1pm to 6pm. We have five artist exhibiting tactile
artwork. Three are blind and two sighted but all touchable. </DIV>

<DIV>We are in room W202A which is in the Orange County Convention Center but
easy to get to from the Rosen Center Hotel. Take the bridge from the second
floor and it is the first door on the right along the main hallway after
you pass the escalators on your right. Hope to see you both there and be sure
to introduce yourself I would love to meet you. </DIV>

<DIV>We have home made play dough and Sensational BlackBoards, the raised line
drawing boards that you can play with until your heart is content. I can show
you some techniques that we have been using at the Colorado Center for the

name is Chris Heckel. I’m a student of Dr. Paul Gabias, a leader in
the National Federation of the Blind who lives in Canada, and works as a
professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna
BC. I have taken two of his courses, the Psychology of Touch I and
the Psychology of Touch II. </DIV>

the Psychology of Touch II course, I Learned about the research to date on
how blind and sighted people take lines and patterns of lines to
represent objects, layouts of objects and events. </DIV>

one class, I had the opportunity to meet Dr. John Kennedy, the pioneer in
the field of haptic pictures of and for the blind. My respect for
Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Gabias, among other things, led me to pursue this line
of investigation. I am fascinated by the similarities and possible
differences with respect to how blind and sighted people deal with
representational systems for depicting objects, scenes and events.
I’m interested in drawings, because that’s what I’ve studied so far.</DIV>
