Nissan Planning Tesla-Like, Camera-Based Autonomous Driving System for 2028

A partnership with A.I. data firm Wayve should accelerate the development
process.

"Our goal is a camera-based system at a very affordable price point,"
Pandikuthira said to Automotive News. "And eventually a lidar version
that’ll allow you to take a nap in the car when you drive."

The collaboration with Wayve is at the heart of Nissan's approach to
semi-autonomous driving, relying on a neural network that learns by
reviewing countless hours of on-board driving footage. Such an approach
differs from other automakers and from autonomous ride-hailing pioneer
Waymo, who focus their approach on a combination of cameras, radar, and
lidar. Additionally, the joint venture with Wayve will likely help Nissan
bring costs down, as the automaker aims to offer its newest autonomous
technology at around $4000. That's half the price of Tesla's current FSD
package, a feat possible by a low hardware overhead of around $2000 per
setup.

"There’s a renewed interest in the company to have a truly capable
self-driving system," Pandikuthira said. "This will make ProPilot
accessible to a mainstream audience."

An Ariya test mule with 11 cameras, five radars, and lidar is reportedly
already out on public roads testing Nissan's new system, but it's not
immediately clear which model will be the first to receive this
semi-autonomous system. Automotive News claims that the newest ProPilot
program will likely be compatible with the Armada, Pathfinder, and Rogue,
and that Japanese and North American markets will be the first ones to
receive the tech.

However, before Nissan's new version of ProPilot can arrive, significant
regulatory hurdles will need to be jumped. Validation testing, as well as a
variety of technical tests, stand between Nissan's new autonomy project and
public use on U.S. roads. Even so, Nissan reportedly believes this kind of
investment is worthwhile for more than simply competing with Tesla.
Instead, Nissan claims its primary focus is on safety.

"We would bring it to market because of the active safety that it
represents," Pandikuthira said. "And what it does for the customer
experience that makes road trips so much more enjoyable and so much less
fatiguing."
