Zoox Smoke Incident & Voluntary Software Recall
Summary:
Zoox issued a voluntary software recall (NHTSA Campaign #26E044) covering
its fleet of 105 autonomous robotaxis operating with software installed
between April 23 and July 2026.
The recall was prompted by a June 20, 2026 incident in Las Vegas where an
unoccupied Zoox vehicle encountered heavy smoke from an active fire scene
that had not yet been cordoned off with traffic cones. The thick smoke
obscured the vehicle's sensor perception system, causing the robotaxi to
brake hard and stop until a remote operator assisted in reversing it out of
the scene.
Zoox developed and deployed an over-the-air (OTA) software update that
improves how the automated driving system detects and responds to heavy
smoke and active emergency scenes. The update required no hardware
modifications or physical repairs.
