[Blind-international-students] [Blind-international-students introduction

Hello Jan and all,
You are totally correct in that there are many factors at work here. I am in know way implying that the leaders of the NFB are not interested in helping international students or doing work abroad, but maybe there are other reasons why the Inter Cultural Committee is not active. You are totally correct that blind people are like sighted people and everyone has their oppinions on how much Americans should do to help those who are not US citizens. At the Arkansas School for the Blind at times I did face some of the stereotypes that you were refering to and I have often heard in the blind community that "why should we help those who are not US citizens when we have our own problems". I once heard a person at a disability conference I attended say "Americans are at times self". This is a person who has traveled abroad extensively and realizes how lucky Americans are. Justen Dart (a civil rights leader in the disability rights movement) found his calling
when visiting a orphanage  somewhere in Asia and saw the conditions in which people with disabilities must live in under developed countries.
Far as employment opportunities for international students, the way immigration laws are designed in this country finding employment for non-US citizens or those who do not hold a green card becomes a challenge. A activity that I have thought for this group is that maybe we can find a immigration lawyer who would be willing to give some free consoltation for members of this group and maybe this can be one of our conference call activities. What is everyone's thoughts on this? Does anyone know of a immigration who would be willing to do this or does anyone know of a good immigration lawyer?
Anmol

I seldom think about my limitations, and they never make me sad. Perhaps there is just a touch of yearning at times; but it is vague, like a breeze among flowers.
