2010 MIUSA Disability Rights and Leadership Programs Announced
Are you interested in building your leadership skills, learning from others
with disabilities, and cross-cultural experiences? Apply now! Deadline to
apply is _March 21 _for the _[2]Costa Rica Cross-Cultural Perspectives on
Disability Rights Exchange _program  from June 16 - July 1, 2010. People
with disabilities from New York City ages 18 - 24 highly encouraged to
apply. _Submit your application before March 21! Late applications accepted
as space permits. _See below for more information about the program.

-March 6-18, 2010: Eugene, Oregon-
[3]The Advanced International Leadership, Employment and Disability (I-LEAD)
program, currently underway, brings together 19 high-level professionals,
with and without disabilities, to Eugene from Central and South America.
The delegation is addressing priority issues for inclusive employment
practices through on-site visits and interactive discussions with government
policy makers and officials. Through the visits and discussions the
delegation is working together to form a strategy to build the capacity of
governments, businesses, schools and disabled peoples organizations to
increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Latin
America.

-May 2-5, 2010: Eugene, Oregon-
The [5]Leadership and Reentry Workshop for FLEX and YES Students with
Disabilities is a follow up to the Preparatory Workshops that are held
earlier in the school year. It provides an opportunity for the students to
reflect on their disability-related experiences in the U.S., participate in
enrichment activities focused on leadership and the rights of people with
disabilities, prepare to return to their home countries and the
disability-related services that are available and create action plans to
encourage other students with disabilities to participate in future FLEX and
YES programs. This program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and
Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by
MIUSA.

-May 7-20, 2010: Eugene, Oregon-
Since 2007, MIUSA has collaborated with partners in the Kingdom of Bahrain
for reciprocal exchange programs between Eugene and Manama, Bahrain. This
year, the [7]U.S./Bahrain Inclusive Sports and Recreation for Youth with
Disabilities Exchange Program will bring together eight sports and
recreation professionals with and without disabilities, and two Bahraini
leaders, for interactive workshops, instructional seminars, site visits,
sport demonstrations and strategic planning sessions, on how to include
youth with disabilities in all sport and recreation programs. This program
is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S.

-June 16-July 1, 2010: San Jose, Costa Rica-
MIUSA will lead a delegation of young adults with disabilities from New York
City on the [9]2010 U.S./Costa Rica: Cross-Cultural Perspectives on
Disability Rights Leadership Exchange Program. The program will incorporate
interactive workshops on disability rights and leadership and there will be
an opportunity to participate in a volunteer service project. During the
program, delegates will become ambassadors of disability rights by sharing
cross-cultural disability perspectives with members of the local community.
The delegates will experience language immersion, food and culture by living
with a local host family. This project is sponsored by the New York

-July 24-31, 2010: Eugene, Oregon-
New FLEX students with disabilities travel directly from their home
countries to Eugene to participate in the [11]Preparatory Workshop for FLEX
Students with Disabilities. The week-long workshop is designed to prepare
students with disabilities to successfully address challenges related to
access and inclusion during their year in the U.S. and to foster successful
experiences for students with disabilities. This program is sponsored by the
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State

-August 7 – 29, 2010: Eugene, Oregon-
MIUSA’s signature women’s program is the [13]Women’s Institute on Leadership
and Disability (WILD). 2010 will be the 5th WILD program that MIUSA has
hosted!  WILD brings together new and emerging grassroots women leaders with
disabilities from around the world to Eugene to build skills, exchange
experiences and strategies, create new visions and strengthen international
networks of support. Through a series of intensive workshops, women move
forward in their personal and professional roles as disabled world leaders.
