Hi Fateema,
Others could probably answer this question more thoroughly, but you
have found the right group.
Many of our members have navigated the University scene as blind
people. We know which services "are" and "are not" available to
international students who are not US. citizens.
Additionally, we hope to provide you and him with a wealth of
resources and assistance, as well as personal contacts when he does
come to the USA.
As far as universities, State Universities (and the larger more well
known universities) have good reputations for accommodating their
blind and visually impaired students. Usually universities have
"disability departments," that understand and serve the disabled
students' needs.I would recommend Purdue,
www.purdue.edu
but I could be a bit Biased. private colleges, specifically those
who have had limited exposure to blind students, are a bit sketchy
with accommodations.
We could narrow the college search down a bit if we knew if your
student had any family/friends in the USA and wanted to stay near
them.
When is your student thinking about coming to the USA?
We can recommend the appropriate resources if we know:
what medium he prefers to read in: (large print, braille or audio),
is he at least familiar with computers and adaptive equipment? which
adaptive equipment or software does he use?
Alternatively, many of us on the list have skype.
Maybe we can set up a skype conference call whereby a few of us can
talk with you one-on-one about the specifics.
Anyone have any better ideas!
