Dear Causes for Change and
Blind International Students,

My brother, Jim, an active member of NFB, sent me the following message, given
that it involves a project in Ecuador. If I can be of any help, I live in Puyo,
Ecuador, on the eastern side of the country in the Amazon.

By the way, I help administer the Omaere Ethnobotanical Park here, where we
teach about the traditional uses of plants, how the Shuar and Waorani people
live. We also offer natural medicine and teach about ecological sanitation. I
can imagine doing a tour for blind visitors, in which we emphasize touching,
smelling, and tasting selected plants. For more info, see www.fundacionomaere.org.

On the Ecological Sanitation front, I am active in the building of Ecological
Dry Toilets and Vegetated Sand Filters, which are especially important in
places like Ecuador where there is next to no wastewater treatment. So far, we
build Ecological Dry Toilets (a.k.a. Urine-diverting Dry Toilets, UDDTs) in
such a way that people need to look and aim with the dry cover material, such
as sawdust and wood ashes, but I am working on a design that does not require
looking, just pedalling a couple of loops on a bicycle pedal. You can see some
of my designs, including some in a fishing village near Naranjal, Guayas,
Ecuador, at www.inodoroseco.blogspot.com.

Blind people here are very marginalized and have few economic alternatives. I
have long thought it would be good to arrange to collect computers with broken
monitors in the US, set them up with voice synthesizers and bring them down for
blind people to use. I think they would likely be especially apt, in this way,
to transcribe recorded meetings, in addition to all the other books and
articles that they could write. Maybe there are computer companies that have
large numbers of computers that have been returned due to defective monitors.

Best wishes,
Chris Canaday
Puyo, Ecuador

Hi everyone,
Zolly is looking for a braille machine for a school in Panama. So if you or
anyone you know who would be willing to donate one it will be much
appreciate it. Also American Association for People with Disabilities
awards 10,000 dollars to groups or individuals doing some project eather in
the United States or abroad. The award is the Paul D. Hern award given every
March at the AApPD gala. So maybe next year we can apply for this grant for
a project that we want to do or to futher our work.
Anmol
I seldom think about my limitations, and they never make me sad. Perhaps
there is just a touch of yearning at times; but it is vague, like a breeze
among flowers.
