Again, you don't need it that long so long as either you can push a manual
chair or you use a power chair and can handle a steeper ramp.  Is balance an
issue for you?

A two foot high deck would need a wramp of twenty four feet. For a power
chair it can be steeper by a few feet less.  I like the movement of
building homes with visitability in mind.  This is a marvelous movement.
This movement says to build in the accessibility on the front end when
you are building the home.  .  Our home was not built like this.  We had
a six inch step, so we had the guy putting in our driveway build a six
foot ramp that looks like just a normal sidewalk to the deck.  

My entry way is not accessible if I were in a power chair.  I have to
pop my front wheels up like two inches to go into my home. We made our
doorways wider.  We have a stair glider to take us up the stairs to our
bedroom.  I transfer to another wheelchair at the top of my steps.  I
have fixed grab bars by the toilet and bathtub and shower.  My stove has
nobs on the front. My microwave talks and is pushed closer to the edge
of the counter. In our home our toilets are sixteen or seventeen inches
high. By my computer desk and knitting machines I have a wooden
temporary floor, which one day I want perminant. 

Mike is right in that you need features that will fit you.  The narrower
the power chair the better you can make corners.  I had a dear friend
who put plexi glass the lower threefeet on her walls in the hallways.

If it's one inch to every foot then you would have a foot drop off with
a inch long ramp.  Wouldn't that be extremely steep?

Actually, the code for ramps is one inch for every foot.  Of course, a
private home may not need that gradual a slope, but remember that you
might wish to consider the resale value when constructing modifications.

Hi Holly,

What modifications your house needs depends on the specific needs of
your disability. (e.g. I use fewer grab bars than someone who is a
quad)Just measure the wheelbase of your chair for the doorways. The
slope of the ramp (and consequently the amount of space it takes up) is
determined by the height that you are trying to reach. (e.g. 1 foot of
rise for every one foot of ramp is the steepest is should be. Hope this
helps.
