Oh wow, I was told it was a must in Rhode Island. When I first had the short
ramp, a cop came to the door and said we had an illegal ramp. My mother
looked at him and said, "how do you suppose my daughter get out of the house
then?" They never bothered us again...well until the state came in.
Oh well, it's water under the bridge now :)

One inch of rise for every foot of ramp. Also, the ADA code is not
absolutely required for a house, but there is wisdom in attempting to meet
it or come as close as possible.
We have a ramp which allows Karen to visit all parts of our back yard. It
winds around part of the yard and has become an integral part of the
landscape. In total it drops more than five feet. There are ways to do
this in most places.

Yes, it would.
I had such a ramp that was built by a friend of the family's for me. I could
not safely go up or down that ramp. When the state came in to evaluate it,
they told me that ramp was "illiegal." It must meet ADA codes.

If it's one inch to every foot then you would have a foot drop off with
a inch long ramp. Wouldn't that be extremely steep?

Actually, the code for ramps is one inch for every foot. Of course, a
private home may not need that gradual a slope, but remember that you
might wish to consider the resale value when constructing modifications.

Hi Paul, thanks. For this info. So if a porch is 2 feet off of the
ground, you need two feet of ramp? just clarifying.

Hi Holly,
What modifications your house needs depends on the specific needs of
your disability. (e.g. I use fewer grab bars than someone who is a
quad)Just measure the wheelbase of your chair for the doorways. The
slope of the ramp (and consequently the amount of space it takes up) is
determined by the height that you are trying to reach. (e.g. 1 foot of
rise for every one foot of ramp is the steepest is should be. Hope this
helps.
