[Blind-rollers] survey

volunteering would be good, also talking to someone you think you might want
to work for. Knowledge is power. The more you know the better you can
adapt. Also, if you put forth some effort on your own before applying for a
job, prospective employers will consider you a good risk as it shows you are
serious.
I feel so out of the loop these days since I stopped working. I mean it was
necessary at the time, but I think it would be nice to take a stab at it
again sometime. I would lose a disability benefit if I did that I wouldn't
get back, which is one reason I approach it very cautiously, but I really
miss having a place of employment to go to every day.
Anyway, when I was interviewing for my first job, I made sure my prospective
employers knew how I operated, and also I bought my own equipment myself
beforehand rather than vouchering it to my employer. I financed it partly
with SS money and also a teaching assistantship I had in grad school, which
was really my first job, and also with a little help from family.
That was before the ADA, but in some respects it was easier to get a job
then with a disability if you went at it the right way, because employers
weren't afraid they'd never be able to fire you if need be.
Things are so different now. And the general unemployment in the country is
crazy.
Well good luck.

Ok, all, since talking careers. Do you all think I could be trained using
my equipment to be an office nurse since I have my nursing license? I was
thinking of volunteering to see what it involves. See if my equipment
would adapt?

Oh I know there are blind teachers -- I've known some of them, and even
considered doing it for a while but things just went another way and I
became a computer programmer...
I was only bringing it up because the survey seemed to focus on blind
students and didn't say anything about the teacher.
I could give some advice, but I'm still coping. The kids I teach are
wonderful though, even the wild ones. They even listen now and
then...*smile*

I know many blind teachers. Sarah teaches science to eighth graders. Kathy
teaches English and litterture to high school students. Both handle dog
guides and both teach sighted children. Rebecca teaches Spanish to blind
children. She is blind. I taught Sunday school.

My husband who is blind taught in a University for a while. Ed Eames
taught
in the University.

There isn't much a blind person can't do.
