Hi Lauren
I love the Bible verses on the bottom of your letter. I'd love to talk with
you as I've been a blind chair user for years, call me 763-522-2501.

Hi,

I took a look at the archives and this is a slower list than some. Maybe
I'll shake it up a bit, haha. And yes, there are some people on here whose
names I recognize. Wow.

I have quite a bit of frustration under my belt regarding people who don't
understand that I cannot walk as fast as they do. I cannot stand as long as
they do. Sometimes when I say I'm going to go somewhere or do something I
have to cancel due to lower stamina issues that they don't have. I have
sometimes been regarded as lazy rather than being understood. I cannot keep
up with the Joneses and don't know that I even want to.

I was very new at using a chair at convention. Back in 2007, right before my
husband passed on, I broke my left ankle and was hospitalized for way longer
than I needed. They wouldn't let me go home. Anyway I was in a chair exactly
like the blue one I have now. I used it for around 8 weeks. I did fine at
home but I could not leave due to a set of stairs. So when I got cabin
fever, I rolled up and down the hallway outside of my apt. Since then, I've
gotten apts that are ground-level. The problem with that is that someone
else likes ground level apts and upsets my kitties-fleas!

People at convention were mostly friendly about my using my chair but
sometimes it felt like the social world was all above me and I didn't have
as many people talking to me as I would have if I were on my feet. I wonder
how you manage that issue. People had major problems getting through the
aisles of chairs in our delegation with my chair at the end of one row. One
person did say "that chair is in the way" and someone said "it makes it a
lot harder to get through with that chair there. What about sitting over
next to the wall." I told him I wanted to sit with everybody, not be
separated. But otherwise, people were okay about it as far as I know. Lots
of canes got caught in it, but thank goodness, I didn't roll over any dogs.

Sometimes I walked, in the exhibit hall, pulling my chair behind me. It was
a nice place to put my too-heavy bag. When I got tired, I could sit down,
which was good. It took me the whole afternoon to go through the exhibit
hall because I kept getting lost and I kept needing to sit down and rest.

My original wheelchair was black and had a canvas-type material on it. On my
flight from DFW to Orlando the airline people broke my new chair. I filed a
claim and they issued me a loaner, which is the one I now have. It is a
better chair than the one I had gotten. (My Dr. said that even if I ordered
a chair through Medicare I'd have to pay a lot for it so I bought one on
eBay.)

Well, enough rambling for now.

Thanks

Lauren
