Having both types of chairs is an excellent idea. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't understand this.

Hi,
I am wanting to be able to have both types of chairs to use, and some people don't understand why. I need a manual chair and cane when people are able to transport me. I need a power chair for times when I use paratransit and when I have to go very far in my chair (our hospital is a large building, for example, and I can't manually manage it; I'm not strong enough.
Thanks,
Lauren

Heather,
I would recommend trying out both a power chair and a scooter before you decide which one will work best for you. Scooters do not work for everyone. Also, I would recommend getting training to use a cane with a wheelchair at one of our NFB training centers. I received training from the Louisiana Center for the Blind, and it helped me grow more confident in my travel skills. I used a power chair, and I still do occasionally. However, most of the time I use my cane with a manual chair because it is easier to transport.

Yes, that would be great to have! I wonder when I get or ever get my scooter or power chair if I can go down there so they can teach me how to use it. Cheers Heather

Hi
I always thought a scooter was not safe for blind people because of having 3 wheels and it could tip, however I don't believe that is the case any more. In fact Scott Crawford who teaches O&M to blind wheelchair users in Louisiana prefers that people have scooters.
As for the distance my power chair can go several miles at a crack so I don't think there is a difference there as far as distance.

HI, thinking about getting a scooter instead of a power chair, they sound like the same thing. I have never seen an actual scooter; are they those things you see at the store like wallmart? It just seems that they go further than a power chair; is this correct? I stopped looking for one cause everyone in my family has to argue, “that will not fit in the car…now I have to get a knew car, you have to help me pay for it..” NO matter that me walking around has caused me to fall several times but, that is what they care about. So I think I will be on stupid crappy transit cause I cant wait anymore. I had so mini bruises that someone might have thought I took up prise fighting! Sie Heather
