[Blind-rollers] so far, so good!

Hi,

I was scheduled for my wheelchair evaluation for April 17, however, they had
a cancelation this afternoon. I was able to get a same-day ride on Ride
Source, which they don't normally do, so I was able to do my evaluation
today!

The physical therapist said he had never recommended a power chair for a
totally blind person, but today he did! There was Bill and then Jason, a
guy from NuMotion, the store where my chair would come from.

They did all the measuring and strength tests and stuff and then they let me
drive a power chair!

It was way way way easier than my manual. I did so well that they were
convinced!

Now the trick will be convincing United Healthcare and then again, Medicare.
So I'm not out of the woods, but the first major hurdle is done!

Now Jason will bring the type of chair they recommend out to my home so I
can try it here. Then they will send the recommendations on to the
insurance.

One thing I did not realize was exactly how the joystick worked. I thought
it was totally forward, backward or either side, on the speed you set. But
they showed me that if I barely touched the joystick it would roll in very
slow motion. That was new to me. I made it past obstacles, down a few
hallways and through a couple doorways and back. I used my cane in my right
hand, like I normally would walking and drove the chair with my left hand.
It was fun!

Thanks,

Lauren
