From b.butterfly at comcast.net Wed Apr 8 16:16:41 2020 From: b.butterfly at comcast.net (Becky Frankeberger) Date: Wed, 8 Apr 2020 09:16:41 -0700 Subject: [Blind-Rollers] manual wheelchair Message-ID: <002801d60dc1$17696280$463c2780$@comcast.net> Why is it so hard for companies to fit us with wheelchairs that fit us? Lauron I am going through the wheelchair blues, like you did several months ago. First of all, I am shocked I got approved for another manual wheelchair. The first one they brought was for a kid. It was to narrow, the seat was weird, tiny for a kid. The second one they brought was a dandy, but to high off the ground and the delivery guy wouldn't fix the problem. Then as I started to use it as is, I discovered the length of the seat was hitting me wrong. But he did put on the seatbelt I paid for. I also liked on this chair the length of the handles for breaks. So, they brought me yet a third. This one has really cool tires. They look like to me they would go through anything, possibly even snow. Certainly, gravel or wet surfaces. But the seat is to narrow, and way to short. Cushions, they also approved special cushions for my back, that I love, and seat which I don't like how hard it is. Forgot to tell you, according to their notes I am five foot six and a hundred and eight pounds. Boy howdy would I love to be that tall and skinny. We corrected that one. The real repair guy is coming today, I hear. When I got this chair I asked about it and they told me that people in power chairs want as few noises as possible. I said that being blind it's a safety concern because I don't know for sure I'm off and I've had several times when I pushed off, thinking it was off only to bump my joy stick and I was on. Even though it's a safety issue they said they won't modify it because if it breaks its too hard to fix anything customized. And I'm surprised that with covid 19 you're getting service now. They basically throw you a bean bag and so have a mold of your but and then with but mapping to see darker colors for pressure areas they make a cushion. I bought my power-chair second-hand and use the seat that came with it. My manual chair has a specific cushion for me and it weighs an absolute ton!! It's not that great either though. I've never looked into the differences between tyre types. Not cushion-related, but one feature I absolutely love is the ability to rotate my control box right out of the way were effectively turning it upside-down. This enables me tget it under desks and tables etc which wouldn't be possible without this feature. It's done through a bracket on the right-hand side of the chair and the control box is attached to an arm which fits into this bracket. All I have to do is loosen a bolt slightly, adjust the box to how I need it and then do up the bolt again. Or what do you have special on your chair to make your life better?> Well I mentioned the custom seating, and like Erica I have what they call the quad link, the joy stick/control box swings out to the right and so it out of the way of tables and desks. I have tilt which goes back far enough so I can lay down in my chair which I do several times a day to prevent but stores. Also I have attendant control so a sighted people can use the joy stick in the back of my chair to drive when I can't because of pain, or its too many people, etc. Those are some of the custom things I have on my chair. My tires have always been air filled with inner tubes for adding more air, but last time I tried to get that and they said they do not like to get them for people any more because of the risk of flat tires. I was reluctant to get the solid gel tires because I was afraid I'd feel every bump but that's all I could get and they are fine, not bad at all but my chair has great shocks and I think if you have that you are good with the solid gel tires. It?s more comfortable to sit in longer-term and easier for me to push because it?s my size. The standard hospital chair rental that you get is too wide and too tall for me and made my hips sit funny and was harder to push because the tires were further away from me. I have a nice gel cushion with cooling foam. It?s negotiable if the foam actually works or not but I like to think it does.
