[Blind-Rollers] the test

Hi
I always feel I'm too close to something with a short cane. You're right if
I take my hand off the joy stick the chair stops but, let's say I'm going
down my driveway which is quite steep, my cane hits something I don't
expect, there is a fraction of a delay while I take my hand off the chair
and the chair is still going forward so I just like to know that gap in time
is filled so no crashes.

Wish we would have thought about the plastic protectors for the doorways,
sad face. They brought me one of the dumbest things, a very wide wheelchair.
You should see my doorways. I had to go perfectly straight to not beat
mercilously my doorways.
Maureen, or anyone, why the long cane. I understood if you lift your hand
off the joy stick the chair stops. I should think with a shorter cane going
back and forth a bit faster, you would get better coverage then with a long
cane. Just my nonprofessional idea.
You all are the experts on to how long and how many sweeps the cane should
make to keep us safe.
Again does anyone have a smart drive and can tell us about your experiences.

Hi Becky
Mine is a full sized power chair, not a smart chair so I can't speak to that
but I use my cane all the time even indoors and can't do the traditional arc
because I can't pick the cane up because of strength, but it's a really long
cane (62 inches) so I have space for stopping and I slide it back and forth
in front of me going slightly past both thee left and right front wheels and
I still miss things so we got those plastic things put on all the corners of
our walls to prevent damage.

Like many of us, I have to go through a test drive of the power wheelchair.
I think he called it a "Smart Drive," whatever that means? Does anyone have
such a critter? I gather it detaches from the chair. My home might be to
tight to use it indoors.
Do you over the ark of your cane so the chairs doesn't tip in case he wants
to take me up the no sidewalk streets I live around. Now if I am indoors,
should the ark just cover the width of my wheels?
Any real help you can give me is appreciated.
I need a mobility lesson from the experts, those of you who use such a
critter.
