Hi Annette,
My apologies for the late response. I had been out of state and am just getting caught up on email. I really wish I had seen your email earlier. I have been living with blindness for about 32 years. I initially became a quadriplegic in 2001 when I was given a chemotherapy as a treatment for a disease I had been misdiagnosed with. The relapse caused by the medication also left me without sensation of touch from the collarbone down. In 2006 I was finally diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition called Neuromyelitis Optica. So my blindness and paralysis are secondary from it. I am relatively new to the NFB. I have struggled with trying to get training and figuring out as much independence as possible with this combination of disabilities. I've contacted one of the directors of the NFB training centers and was told they didn't know how they could help.
Since I lack sensation of touch and can't use the keyboard, I cannot just use jaws and have to use speech recognition and a program called J-Say. Of course I can't use Braille either. I can't access touch screens due to this and lack of proprioception. It has left me feeling marginalized since I can't use the typical alternative techniques that probably nearly all blind people use. Someone from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee spoke at the Oklahoma state convention where I shared my story and struggles. He had told me to email the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee but I just hadn't gotten around to it. If you would like to know more, please feel free to contact me.

Welcome Annette
I don't post often, I'm a very good lurker. I have a very dodgy relationship
with my inbox, which doesn't help!
I'm a power chair user but don't go out without support.
I hope you find the list of personal use, as well as in your work with NFB.
Kind Regards,
Erica from the UK

Hello
You will love this list, there are lots of people with good ideas. I've been
totally blind since 1993 and had a spinal cord injury in 1996 so use a power
chair. The biggest issue I've seen on the list is the problems people have
convincing medical folks they can use a power chair.

Hi, My name is Annette Anderson
(aanderson at csjtech.com<mailto:aanderson at csjtech.com>). I just found this
list.
I'm a long-time federationist living in the Cleveland Oh. Area.
I'm a retired Civil Rights Investigator, and president of my local NFB
chapter. I've been in a wheelchair for about six years.
I would be interested to know what issues are of concern to the members of
the list and what challenges they are facing.
I am a member of NFBO's Diversity, Equity and inclusion committee. We are
planning some webinars in the next few months, which we will announce on
NFBnet. We will be looking for speakers with mobility impairments and those
with secondary disabilities.
I am looking forward to hearing from members of the list.
