Hello Jason,
It may be too early for a straw. How long has your child been using a sippy cup? It sounds like your child is more interested in orral stimulation at this point. Try giving him objects which require the he keep in his mouth but are durrable and purposeful. A toy whistle comes to mind. He must keep it in his mouth to blow and it is durrable so he will get tired of trying to chomp. Hold on to your ears! In the hospital we have used toothbrush sponges. They are little sponges which are coated with toothpaste and on a stick. You moisten the sponge and rub the teeth and gums. This will prevent your child from eating too much toothpaste which can cause him to upchuck.
