[blindkid] Braille Music question

      My daughter is a freshman in high school.  She plays in a youth
orchestra as well as the school concert band.  She learns her music
primarily by ear.  But she is getting tired of being dependent on her
teacher to record her part.  So she is motivated to learn Braille music.
It seems to be working pretty well.  But it can be a challenge to find a
good music transcriber for her band and orchestra pieces.

If your daughter has any thoughts of continuing music into college,
she must learn to read Braille music. My son is a freshman in college
majoring in music education. He really wasn't interested in learning
braille music until he started playing with several community
orchestras. With the extra amount of music he had to learn, he found
it difficult to memorize it all just by listening to it. He still is
able to memorize everything, but it is so much easier to have read it
along with listening. Imagine trying to memorize a poem or chapter in
a book by listening to it over and over. If you never saw it on paper,
it would be extremely difficult.
Kyle is doing a Braille music seminar at the NFB national convention.
I'm sure he would be happy to talk to your daughter about it.
