Hmmm... that always amazes me to learn that anyone in MD would be having
these sorts of issues. 1. the NFB is headquartered there, and 2. I had the
pleasure of meeting one of your past lieutenant governors Kristen Cox. In
any event Susan, tell your son to keep fighting the good fight and to not
allow himself to be marginalized by anyone. My friend and mentor, Ollie
Cantos, pronounced Ohllie, is very verse in such matters and offered himself
to you and your son to discuss the matter further. This will be with his
personal NFB hat on and intermittently he may choose to where his DOJ hat
as needed. Please take him up on his offer to discuss this at length by
calling him as he suggested. Peace.
Whats the kids name? His mother may call me at (202) 616-3030. Thanks,
buddy.

Susan where are you located. I have resources in New York but not sure if
that would help. My contacts seem to feel that stores are obligated to lend
assistance as part of accessibility concerns and issues as protected under
the A D A, but it is and can be misconstrued. I have a note into my contacts
at the department of Justice. When I hear back I will most certainly share.

Susan,
I do believe the O&M instructor is correct. They by law don't have to give
your son any assistance. Especially given the time of the year he's going to
the store. Because they are usually extremely busy this time of the year
with all the holiday shoppers.

Subject: [blindkid] question re shopping assistance
This week my son's O&M lesson was at the mall where he was going to do his
Christmas shopping. He has his list and his money and off he went with his
O&M teacher. In each store he was to ask for assistance to look for the
desired item. This went well in until they got to Sears. He went to customer
service and requested someone to assist him to shop and was told that they
did not have anyone to do that. When I asked what the O&M teacher said about
that he stated he was told that there was nothing they could do about it as
there is no law that says the store has to provide him with assistance. Now
I am 99% sure that this is not correct. Can someone cite the law to me?
Thanks.
Susan
