[blindkid] Cane Travel for 4 year Old

Barbara - this is a great suggestion. I will pass this on to the
school (and use it at home). Maybe we are expecting too much too soon
and need to back off a little and go for successful short trips. I
love this list. Everyone here is so helpful.

Debi, this is the frustration we have with our twins and why we gave up
using it at home for now. (We have other pressing issues to figure out
before bringing the canes back into the mix.) However, at school what is
done is they use their canes for very short distances going to a
preferred activity. For instance, Jesse loves the sensory room so he
uses it from five or ten feet out to find the room. This is hoping that
since he likes the activity then he will be happy to use the cane
properly to get there. When Paul's behavior is under control, I plan on
trying this to get to our vehicle. (He is constantly requesting car or
van rides.) I'm not sure, but I think, school makes them start over
again if they misuse the cane. The thought is that if the child really
wants to get there he will do it correctly instead of wasting time
repeating the walk.
