[blindkid] The Practice ACT test (called "The Plan")

Hi all,
I am so glad we're having this discussion on the SAT, PSAT, etc. Hannah
took the practice ACT, called "The Plan" for the first time earlier this
year. She got her results back and she did pretty well. She took the test
the same day and place as the other kids and did it all in Braille -- I
think with no special assistance. She was not able to take the PSAT because
the school did not file the required paperwork in time. Please help your
child by nagging the school WAY IN ADVANCE and making sure they are doing
what is needed. We thought that bringing this up at IEP meetings 2 years in
advance would do the trick, but we should have done more to ensure that the
school was taking care of business. If I had it to do over again, I would
have called the SAT officials myself and done the footwork, then handed it
to the school and nagged every week until all the required paperwork was
submitted. I can't wait to read the results of Carol C.'s research on this
topic! Jill

My son took the PSAT's, in Braille, last October.

I was not successful contacting ETS by email, so I called them in March
before he was to take the test, to review the procedures. My son obtained
an
application from his school guidance office. We completed part of it, his
guidance counselor completed part and I believe his vision teacher may have
had to
verify, as well. We had to indicate his diagnosis/eye condition to explain
why
he would want to take it in Braille. (Not just a fun exercise.) A panel
reviews the request. My son received a letter notifying him of the
accommodations
approved by the College Board.(The school received one, too.) It covers the

PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, & AP Exams. The letter indicated that he is
eligible to receive the accommodations outlined as long as he remained at
the
same school and the school verified that he continues to be eligible.

Don't delay in applying. It was about a month until he received the letter,

but I understand it can take longer.

FYI: The Braille PSAT is given on an earlier date than the one you register

for. He was registered for the Saturday date with everyone else and a short

time before he planned to take the test, the school notified us that he
would
take it the Wednesday before everyone else, as it is a national date for
the
Braille PSAT. He needed to notify teachers he would be missing class & was
of
course responsible for missed work etc. Needless to say, although they
tried, it wasn't as quiet as on a Saturday when only test takers are in
school.

The guidance counselor gave him the Braille practice materials that were
sent to him.

It's a process, but part of the college prep for our kids.
Hope this helps.
Eileen

Carol,
I am quite surprised that a reader is permitted to read more than the
directions, questions, etc.
Each year, I must administer the NJASK to either a small group of special
needs students or an individual with accommodations & we are not permitted
to
read the reading section to them under any circumstances!

Hello.
?
Does anyone know how to go about subscribing to the braille version of
"Conundrum" or any other word/logic problem magazines?
?
In addition, I am seeking information about adapted testing for intelligence
testing for a 9 year old. I know that some can be adapted however while the
question may be in Braille, the question is still heavily reliant on one's
visual perception.
?
Thank you,

I would love info on this as well. We've had several issues here, with
several kids. I'd like to help be sure they are tested appropriately.

Yes, I was really surprised myself. I was under the impression that
a reader was only allowed to read the directions and I asked both
testing company representatives the question as many ways as I could
think of. ACT said "as long as they read verbatim" and SAT said they
can read "all test items and questions" When I asked for
clarification ("Can they read the reading passages?"), the pleasantly
surprising answer was that they can indeed read the reading passages
and take direction from the blind test taker to go back and reread
the line or lines the test questions refer to.

Here is a link to a book written by a school psychologist (I think) at Texas

School for the Blind: http://www.tsbvi.edu/publications/mem.htm . It
contains information on which parts of standard intelligence tests are
meaningful in assessing students with visual impairments. Here is a list of

some other information found on the TSBVI website:
http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/TSBVI?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=spell&r
esnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=intelligence+tests&spell=1

I realize not everyone agreed with Ben's decision not to use a cane; as you
may recall, retinoblastoma took his eyesight at a young age and he relied on
echolocation for mobility.?
?
However, it's very sad that his cancer came back and he passed away earlier
this week.
?
Not sure if anyone heard... Link attached.

Mindy,
Thanks for telling us. How very sad, I had no idea.
Cane or no cane-He was treated and expected by his mother to do all normal
things, he cooked, he skated, rode bike, played video games-I am filled with
sorrow that his life was so short, but in the life he did have I am glad he
had such joy and experienced much of it to the fullest. He seemed like such
a bright animated kid-I can't imagine how heart broken his mother must be.
My heart and prayers go out for her.
