[blindkid] software that makes cell phones accessible

A counselor at the STEP program in Ruston just purchased the April IPhone
3Gs and it is "off the shelf" accessible, which I think is a major step in
the right direction. Not sure they really made it this way with
accessibility for the blind in mind, but it is accessible.

There is also another option where you don't even have to buy a third party
piece of software to make the cell phone accessible. Apple back in mid June
released the Apple IPhone 3GS which has their screen reader Voice Over that
is included on their MAC computers and the most recent generation of both
the IPod shuffle and Nano.

You get a discounted price on the Mobile Speak software if you purchase the
software & the phone from AT&T.
We purchased both the phone & Mobile Speak software from AT&T, but I've
spent hours on the phone & have yet to resolve all the issues.
AT&Ts "National Center for Customers with Disabilities (NCCD)" has not been
particularly helpful & their tech support staff were clearly just reading
off instruction sheets & I could tell that they were not familiar with menus
to the phone we ordered (which AT&T was supposed to be supporting since its
their phone).
AT&T's NCCD called when I was out today & even had the nerve to assert to my
wife that Mobile Speak was "third party software" implying that they were
somehow therefore not responsible for the problems we have had in getting
the permanent license to register properly on the phone.
Mobile Speak is based in Spain & the Mobile Speak customer support has
offered to call - only issue is that my son & his partially accessible phone
is now off at "camp" for a few weeks.
I'm glad things went smoothly for some of you, but be prepared to
potentially pull your hair out if you have problems.
The Mobile Speak software ifself on demo seems fine.
The time I have wasted was not worth the money "saved" by going through
AT&T. I would suggest purchasing the software through a non-AT&T vendor.
Hold you breath if you go through AT&T.
Eric V, an obviously frustrated AT&T customer :-(
