[blindkid] Questions for parents of blind high schoolers

Sally,
Hannah is a junior in high school this year. For the most part, her TVI
makes sure that all of Hannah's handouts, worksheets, etc. are in Braille
and that she has all of her textbooks in Braille. She doesn't have any
planned time scheduled to work directly with her TVI this year, though, she
did have a "free" period last year in the TVI room where she could get
instruction if needed. I will say that since Hannah's Braille Note crashed
last week I can see that we should have gotten Hannah more practice with
scanning print documents and embossing things by herself. Sometimes it
takes a "crisis" like that to see where the holes are. Hannah's TVI does
come to the school every morning for about 3 hours to go to each teacher and
collect anything that needs to be Brailled or adapted for that school day,
as well as to transcribe her Brailled math homework into print for the math
teacher. If I had what I wanted, Hannah would have an hour/week with the
TVI to work on technology skills. That's my next phone call :) Sadly, we
have not found good O and M training here in Wyoming, so we rely on those 8
weeks at the Colorado Center for the Blind to work on her travel skills.
Hope this info is helpful! Jill

Some questions for those of you who have kids in high school or recently
graduated: I'm wonder if your kids continue to get direct services from the
teacher of blind students while in high school. Did/do the kids see the
teacher during the school day or before or after the regular school day?
How many hours per week of services does your child receive? Do you wish it
was more or less? Do you have consult service hours (time for the teacher
of blind students to talk with the classroom teachers) detailed in the IEP
document?
It's IEP time again here so I'm trying to get some perspective on the
upcoming high school years.

Sally,
The whole time I was in high school I worked with Teachers for the
Visually Impaired. It was ever really totally clear to me as why I was
still working with them because it's not like we did a whole lot of
stuff. In fact, if you asked most the students faculty and staff
especially at the high school I graduated from I don't even really
think that they knew I was visually impaired. In fact, I had that very
thing happen with my younger
sister biology teacher. This teacher didn't realize until my younger
sister and her best friend at the time did a report on Albinism. This
teacher didn't realize that I had Albinism. I guess that was my first
time feeling like I've educated someone able my condition, even though
I really didn't say anything.
