[blindkid] Wrestling

Good afternoon everyone,

Robert you're causing me to recall memories of school days.
Greco-Roman Wrestling was, and I believe still is a very popular sport among
schools for the blind around the country. We used to have several
interscholastic tournaments among the schools for the blind in the
Northeastern United States. In addition each school wrestled various high
school teams in their area. This is one sport blind and sighted students can
compete in on an equal basis.

I won't add anything more than what Robert all ready said concerning
learning the moves and such. Greco-Roman Wrestling is often seen during the
Summer Olympics Broadcasts. Rollin Gardner was a gold metal winner for the
U.S. in 2000.

This is not the so-called ""Wrestling you see on T.V. WWF Tournaments are
10% wrestling and 90% theatre. The kind of stuff that goes on during WWF
Meets would never be tolerated in Greco-Roman meets and tournaments. Please
be sure that the kids understand the difference between the two; that what
they see or hear on television is not the competitive wrestling they will
persue in school. Perhaps your son will be a future Olympic metal winner
participating in the regular events right along with sighted Olympians. All
the best.

Peter Donahue

Hello Becky:

It has been a long time since I wrestled. If I recall correctly, the
rules are that if a blind person is wrestling, that contact cannot be broken
during the match. The other thing is that someone will need to show your son
the various moves. He may have to feel someone in the various positions. If
someone gives a good verbal description of what is needed he ought to be
able to follow the instructions. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Robert
