We bought my 7th grader a Toshiba netbook.

It works well, is small & light. It is slower than my laptop, but gets the 
job done & is more portable & less expensive.

It also has a really nice feature that many Toshiba laptops have that allows 
you to easily turn off the mouse pad completely by simply hitting Function + 
F9 -> that way you don't have to worry about the cursor accidently moving to 
some other part of the document or webpage when your finger, thumb, or 
sleeve brushes over the mouse pad.

If for some reason I need to do something with the mouse, I can easily turn 
it on & off with eth same key strokes.
