[blindkid] alternative parenting guide

Sherry,

As a blind son of a blind mother, and father to my 3-year-old blind son, I
would say that you are probably the best equipped to adopt and raise a blind
child as a blind parent. With all due respect to all of the "light
dependent" parents on the list, there was probably quite a learning curve
that took place after the diagnosis of blind children of sighted parents.
The learning curve is there for all parents, but as far as blindness is
concerned, we who are blind already have a lot of alternative techniques
figured out and are prepared to teach them.

I am grateful to the NFB and the NOPBC for providing the network and
encouragement that our family needs. Without the positive philosophy of the
NFB, I can pretty much tell you that I wouldn't be as jazzed as I am about
knowing that I can be a competent blind parent to both blind and sighted
kids. Each of our future kids has a 50% chance of being blind. They probably
have a 50 50 chance of having blonde hair too. All very interesting!...

I hope it all works out and I look forward to hearing all about it.

By the way, our 3 year old son Josiah is blind and our 1-year-old daughter
Jenna is sighted. Also, we are expecting a boy in October. Of course we are
anxious to learn all we can about Andrew as soon as he is born, but we are
not overly concerned about his possible blindness.

Take care and I wish you the best.

Blessings,

Steve and Laurie Heesen
