Great news for Jack! That teacher seems like a "keeper". I hope you'll
share all of these positive comments with her. Jack is on his way!

Jack is writing! Jack's plain old non-expert in blindness run of the mill
(really she's the world's best I'm just giving you the perspective of all
those "professionals") preschool teacher came up with the idea of getting
him to make braille letters with his cookies at lunch. He has to put the
"dots" (the cookies) in the correct position for the letter of the week
before he eats them.

I actually cried when she told me that he did it!

Do you know what the prize is for selling the most tickets? Is Winona able
to come with you this year? There's a new family from FL going for the first
time and they have a little girl that's 13. They received a national
scholarship
and are VERY excited to go to Dallas. They've been attending our Saturday
events since September and were at state convention as well.

See you soon!

The National Organization of Parents of Blind Children is once again selling
50/50 raffle tickets. Last year's prize was $1100. All families attending
the NFB convention in Dallas, July 3-9, are encouraged to see RoseMarie
Bowman in Dallas to help sell these. There is a prize for the person selling
the most tickets! Tickets are $1 each.

Be sure to see RoseMarie, or one of the families at convention to purchase
your tickets!

Not attending convention? No problem! Contact RoseMarie at
mouse1948 at hotmail.com to purchase in advance. Make checks to NOPBC and mail
by June 28 to RoseMarie Bowman, 19030 Pelkey, Detroit, MI 48205.

You do not have to be present to win!

Hi All,

There seem to be a lot of questions about facebook use lately. Many state
affiliates, chapters and divisions now have pages or groups. I know that
many
of our teens and young adults also use facebook and most that are totally
blind prefer using it through their phone as it cuts out all the graphics.
Someone forwarded this tutorial to me, and I was wondering if anyone
has used it and if so, has it been any help?

Facebook for the blind - mini tutorials for screen reader users
Facebook for the blind? ah yeah. These tutorials are designed for Internet
explorer users. Therefore some of the instructions may not apply to users
of the firefox web browser. It's all doable from the keyboard, no mouse
required. http://www.stacybleeks.com/facebook_tutorials.html

National Federation of the Blind Names Laurel Hudson

2010 Distinguished Educator of Blind Children

Baltimore, Maryland (June 21, 2010): The National
Federation of the Blind (NFB) has named Laurel
Hudson, a teacher of blind students at the
Coralwood Diagnostic Center in Atlanta, Georgia,
as its 2010 Distinguished Educator of Blind
Children. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"
/>Hudson will be presented with the award at the
NFB?s seventieth annual national convention, to
be held July 3?8, 2010, at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

Hudson has taught blind students for more than
thirty-nine years. She began working with blind
children at the Perkins School for the Blind in
Watertown, Massachusetts, and then switched to
working in mainstream settings within public
schools. She has taught as both a teacher of
students with visual impairments and an
orientation and mobility specialist. In her
current role at the Coralwood Diagnostic Center,
Hudson teaches orientation and mobility, Braille
literacy, and technology skills to students aged four to fourteen.

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National
Federation of the Blind, said: ?Laurel Hudson?s
dedication to blind students is unparalleled. As
an orientation and mobility specialist and a
teacher of Braille, Hudson gives her students the
tools for independence and academic
success. With only one out of ten blind children
learning Braille today, it is clear that many
teachers of blind students are simply not
teaching Braille. Hudson?s conviction in the
importance of Braille literacy sets her apart and
makes her an obvious choice to be the NFB?s
Distinguished Educator of the year. The National
Federation of the Blind commends Hudson for her
commitment to the education of blind students.?

Hudson received her master of education in
orientation and mobility and her doctorate in
visual impairments and blindness from Boston
College. She was previously honored with the
Georgia Distinguished Educator of Blind Children Award in 2009.

The Distinguished Educator Award carries with it
a $1,000 prize and an all-expense-paid trip to
the 2010 NFB National Convention in
Dallas. While in Dallas, Hudson will address
several hundred parents and educators of blind
children and have an opportunity to share her
experience and insights with many people
interested in improving the education of blind students.

Glad to hear about the new family attending National! What a great
experience for them!
Are they from up your way? Please feel free to give them our contact info
(email and/or phone). I'm sure Winona would be happy to talk to the teen,
compare stories, etc. I'd be happy to talk with them, too, of course.

I believe the student prize for selling most tickets is $25, but I'm not
sure. I know it is cash! You could contact RoseMarie, or ask at convention.

Unfortunately, we won't make convention this year due to work and family
situations. Very strange to miss both State and National. I'm having
withdrawals! I hadn't missed either in 7 or 8 years.

Sounds like the trip to Sea World after State was great!

Blind Children
