[blindkid] IDEA Bringing Technology Home

Joy Joy, it is start of new year and New IEP's. Even those of us that are yrs into these processes still run into new problems and challenges each year. I come to you all with a request for help. Problem #1 Our school system is not allowing our 9yr old to bring home his apex to do his homework they are saying it is $5000, so don't even ask to take it home. We have a braille note at home but we are running into problems with finding a older printer to print out what he brailles (Reports), Homework, etc., so we can help him edit work. They say they can send home his flash drive to use on his braille note, but that does not help us print and edit. And several times he has come home with homework with no flash drive so we are sending our braille note back and forth. I have ask multiple times if we can see how we can remedy this problem. I have thrashed several options back and forth. But are seeking new ideas from the Seasoned Parents out there. I also am looking for the IDEA Section that mentions the use of Technology at home for homework? Concern 2. What are 4th grades out there using to do Math successfully and most quickly. Our son can verbally give answers very quick but to do a flash drills on paper the teacher is complaining it is taking to long. Also I have asked for three yrs to be using the abacus. The 1st yr the teacher said He did not want to. But I explained we don't give 1st graders choices as to weather they want to read or learn math. We do it! Second yr I assumed I got my point across. WRONG. Third yr I got it in his IEP as a goal. This yr I asked our Son if he was learning the Abacus which is in the IEP and he said not since last yr? He is to be also working on learning to do his math on the braille writer. He also uses a math Windows. So that brings me to the question, what have your kids found to be the fastest method to do multiple colum addition, subtraction, etc. and what amount of time was dedicated with the TVI to be successful.

> Carol Yes I am very excited to say the MD POBC are the starting force behind this workshop. Brandon is starting Band this year and started me think that our County has never had any training on Braille Music and how many other County's have not either. I approached Lisa Wright the coordinator for the St. Board of Education and the TVI's and the Blind Kids, about having a Braille Music course. She jump aboard excited. We want to stay in the picture so we offered Child care and lunch. Which we found out that State can not offer. So yes we are excited that we are co Sponsors of the event.
