one thing I can add that hasn't been mentioned yet: there are free Apps for the iPod that enable the user to send text messages and to make phone calls.
Yup. That's right. The phone call app doesn't use a stable phone number, so you have to get used to getting calls from strange long distance numbers, but I got used to that pretty quick.
Also ( I guess I have 2 things to add) if you get a used or refurbed iPod make very sure it's not too old to be accessible. I think 3rd gen on up are accessible, but double check it if you decide to go that route.
