I don't think rocking and eye poking typically have much to do with
anxiety though they may be aggravated by anxiety or acute stress. I
wouldn't encourage medication unless there are other anxiety symptoms
going on. I personally believe that rocking and other types of hand
and body motions come from a blind child acting on the unconscious
urge to fidget or be physically expressive (which everyone has) but
not knowing how other people around him/her do it. If you think about
it, rocking is no more unacceptable than a person gesturing or talking
with their hands, except that the latter is more common than the
former. Perhaps find out how other kids fidget and teach her to do
these things in an unobtrusive way. If she rocks or has unusual arm
movements while talking or excited, show her how to gesture to express
her feelings in a way that is more similar to how other folks around
her do these things. Too often blind kids just hear "no" without any
information about what behaviors *are* acceptable. If they don't get
that information visually and aren't given it in another way, they
will just go ahead and invent a new behavior to substitute for the
forbidden one.
Eye poking is a whole different animal and seems much more of an
instinctual attempt to stimulate nerves around non-functioning eyes. I
have likened it to jiggling one's legs about after being forced to sit
still for a long time in order to relieve tension that comes from
understimulation of the muscles etc. We haven't come up with a good
solution for this problem though I suspect it would be easy to invent
a glasses-like device that provides the desired pressure without
damaging the eyes or being unsightly. Until somebody figures out how
to do this, all we have are semi-effective verbal reminders and using
physical barriers to make poking more difficult. It is possible for a
very motivated child or adult to quit poking but it takes a lot of
self-awareness and discipline.
