Hello Darci:

Hope you have a great trip. I don't know the current procedure, but
your congressman may be able to get you a pass to visit the White House and
also arrange for a tour of the Capitol building. Be sure to mention you have
a blind child. A lot has changed since 9/11.

Last year I visited the 2nd floor of the Air and Space Museum and
looked at the Wright brothers display. There is a large relief map showing
the route the Wright brothers took from Dayton to Kitty Hawk. This map has
braille labels on it. I was with a friend and read him all the labels. The
area around the exhibit got quiet and lots of people were watching me read
the braille.

In Baltimore, there are some ships that can be toured. One of them is a
19th century sailing ship the Constellation. You will need to do some
research and call ahead for a tour. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Robert

P. .

I think it would be possible to spend a month just touring the
Smithsonian museums.

Subject: [blindkid] Washington DC

I am taking my kids to DC for spring Break. My 9 yr old is completely blind
and has written his Representatives asking for Braille materials.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ways to access the museums?
I grew up there, but have never explored the city with my kids. I want them
to fall in love with DC and its rich history.

Thank you in advance,
Darci Hooks
